Well, now I really stepped over the edge. I guess I looked at too many of these so I finally did the deed. He is also sending two 1300HP Huber trannies along with racing engine mounts that bolt in between the stringers. This one will be receiving the engines out of my 36' along with a III speedmaster drive that I have in stock so I will be selling the 36' without power for very little in the near future. Another project! :bonk: Bill

Wow, Bill, I can't even keep up with your fleet list. That gun looks really great, I love the simple paint scheme. Can't wait to see the motors go in.

Congrats!

Thanks guys for not calling me nuts - lol. Actually thank you for the votes of approval. It seemed like a good way to make a fairly nice boat out of what I had. The relatively clean Kevlar hull, external steering, III speedmaster drives, and fairly new triple axle aluminum trailer were just too much bait for my boating weakness. I think it will work out well, but it will be a while before I can tackle the work. Onwards, Bill

PS The man who is selling it bought it for the 1100HP engines that were in it for his other Cigarette so this deal is working out for both of us.

I am fairly certain that boat came from the Cincinnati area. The guy lived in northern Kentucky. If I remember correctly it was called "Bounty Hunter." He had it on craigslist for a while.

The last time I remember seeing it out on the river was back in 2001-2ish.... Cool boat. I think my cousins husband did the interior in it a long time ago....

Nice find!

-----Nice going, Bill!!!!! For once a Cig with good looking graphics. I get so tired of all the crazy stuff. And, you are correct, it seems like that boat was calling out to you. It doesnt look like it needs anything you dont have. Careful towing it as it will have a bunch of tongue weight without the motors.......Bill S

Thanks for the Bounty Hunter history. It is a US Coast Guard documented boat with the present name of Fox Hunter. It sounds like a simple thing to get it registered in my name, and I will probably register a different name to keep the peace with Deanna - lol.
Bill, that is a good point about the tongue weight. I will probably be trying U-ship again since I don't like pulling these long and heavy boats any farther than around here. My 1996 GMC 1 ton dually only has the gas 454 Vortec when I think a diesel is really needed. Thanks, Bill

I talked to Vern, and the boat and parts are ready to go as soon as I line up the shipping. He sent the US Coast Guard documentation via USPS yesterday. He spent the weekend waxing the boat and getting the trannies palletized and the engine mounts installed, and the boat is in a building at this point. Here are a few shots he sent. Bill

bill,,,also keep in mind if you use the rear race mount you need to shave off 1/4'' off the bell housings..speaking of bell housings are you getting the ssm ones?

ssm stuff is a whole lot differant that the trs stuff..does your trs stuff have the oil coolers built in the bell housings?

-----------------------------------------------------------

Mike, I am a little lost here. As far as I know, the engines and velvet drives should bolt right into place without modifications. If the Cigarette had been fitted with Merctrans, it would be different. By memory, I think my tranny coolers are near the water intakes, but my engine oil coolers are the largest I have ever seen and mount to the engine compartment bulkhead. My biggest concern will be the exhausts. I guess I will find out soon enough how things fit. Bill

02-24-2012, 02:13 AM
Bill if you got the bell housing that came with the Cig you will be OK. If you need to buy a new BW bell housing just as Mike said you will need to take a 1/4" off the face of the bell housing that mounts to the engine block. The reason is the rear engine mount is 1/4" thick.

Mike and Mark,
Now I understand what you are talking about. Quite honestly, I don't know how the 36' is rigged at the rear mounts without looking again so I don't know if my bell housings are already cut back. Is the easiest way to remove and install the engines to lift out the entire engine packages with the trannies and mounts attached or start with just the engines? It has been a long time since I removed an engine that had a tranny. Any advice would be helpful. Bill

The seller (Vern) has been really great by letting me leave the boat at his building in Des Moines, Iowa until I made storage arrangements. Just this week I had a 60' stall open up so I put it on Uship for bids last night. It looks like $1200 might be the bid I use to get it here by the 4th. The guy (Michael) has a Ford F450 so tongue weight and the 200lb pallet with the Huber trannies won't be a problem. I thought the bid was very reasonable for the 625 mile trip especially considering the size of load. Less than $2/mile. I will probably work out a deal with Derebery Performance boats to do the grunt work of changing out the engines and I will take over from there. Just a quick update. Bill

It will take me a while to learn the features in the boat and get it running again. I took my wife out last night to see it for the first time as a surprise since I had not told her about buying it. We were both impressed with the cabin layout and the overall condition and features it has. The incredible wiring would even make George Carter take notice - lol. Thanks Mario and Marshall. My gameplan is to transplant the 540s from the 36' Cigarette and sell the 36 without engines. The 36 ran 70MPH with the 540s that make 630HP each and I am hoping for 75MPH in the 38 Top Gun since it weighs less being Kevlar and the beam is less. Onwards, Bill

Conquistador_del_mar
04-07-2012, 11:18 AM
I have to admit that I am a little intimidated by the wiring in the Cigarette since the previous owner did not mark the wires in the engine compartment when he pulled the engines. I also will have a little trouble with the hydraulic hosing for the full external dual ram steering, but I believe all the pieces will come together when I start the work. These pictures are the wiring in the head which is forward from the driver's console. I was shocked at the amount and quality of wiring! Bill

Conquistador_del_mar
04-07-2012, 01:12 PM
Last night I was studying the boat and saw the dual fuel tanks are mounted side by side just ahead of the engine bulkhead and are 119 gallons each. I was a little surprised that there is no plumbing for which tank to be using. Each tank is run to each engine separately with really nice quality and size fuel filters and huge fuel lines with screw on hose fittings. There are in-line brass water filters, 4 Gil battery holders, a 40 amp Guest battery charger from shore power, red racing engine mounts, and TRS drive fluid glass sight levels built into the transom assemblies (something I have not seen before). I am very impressed with the engine compartment and the hatch lift ram makes access easy. I had to run battery power to some jumper wires to the hatch lift which the previous owner ran through the transom until some batteries are installed. Overall, I am more impressed with the boat than what I thought I would be getting when I bought it. One of the pictures shows one of the two bi-directional fans built into the cabin bulkhead - cool idea! Bill

Bill,

What is the beam & weight difference between the 36' & 38' ?...... ..That's a sizable speed gain wth those 540's over the 36'
Wonder what the 38' did when she was once paired with those 1100hp engines?.......All the accessories look great on the 38'
I'd like to have first crack when you tire of her!!..............been looking seriouisly for a family offshore.

Conquistador_del_mar
04-07-2012, 06:49 PM
Pete,
It is only my guess from both the previous owners that the 38' weighs about 2000lbs less than the 36'. I might be dreaming about the speed increase, but I really think 5MPH is being conservative. Yes, you would be welcome to it when I decide to sell it, but I hope to enjoy it for a while. Bill

Hi Scippy,
I am not sure about what will end up happening. The boat I just bought was originally made for Jerry Jacoby (racing fame and Hawk engines). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Jacoby It deserves to be back out in circulation. One day at a time. Onwards, Bill

Thanks. I'm excited to see the boat and get on the project. After looking at quite a few engines, I felt this was too good a deal to pass up. Not only do I get the engines with exhausts, but the trannies, tailstocks, good SSMIII drives (unfortunately with the short shafts - the early ones), props, K-planes, etc. It won't cost much more to get the boat towed here than 2 engines palletized and shipped would have cost. The boat was built in 1979 for Jerry Jacoby and has relatively high X dimension mounted drives. It has some interesting exhausts built by Gaffrig (only about 30 sets ever made). True ss headers. It even has the air actuated silencer tips. Here is one of the only engine pictures I have. Bill

A month later and the Cig is on its way. The hauler just called me to let me know he should be here tomorrow with it if the trailer makes it and he does not get "red flagged". In hind sight, I would have had it hauled on a large flatbed trailer (Cig, trailer, and all). :crossfing: Bill

I need to show this thread to my wife - she complains about the two small boats and a canoe in the duckhunter navy... My buddy found a clean 18 down in Jax for $10k yesterday and she punched me on the shoulder for even talking about it.

The Top Gun looks immaculate and well-rigged. Going to be a head turner down there on Texoma. Looking forward to the updates as you get the refurb rolling. Good luck!

Conquistador_del_mar
12-20-2012, 01:26 AM
Yep, Mike (Fixall) wrote me an email about it knowing that I could use some engines and said he used to see it running. He did not know the Cig was originally built for Jacoby, but he did know about the engine builder building NASCAR engines. I just hope the engines work out as I hope. The boat and trailer are rough and I have yet to see the engines since the hatch won't open until I charge the batteries.

Thanks Duckhunter. Quite honestly, there are quite a few Cigs and larger boats here so I don't know about it turning any heads but in my own world - lol. Onwards. Bill

Conquistador_del_mar
12-31-2012, 12:41 AM
For better or worse, here are the 572s which obviously need some serious cleanup before installation in the Top Gun. Check out the Gaffrig exhaust headers which bolt together with a center section - only a few of these were ever made, but they are supposed to be bulletproof. They are stamped S1, S2, P1, and P2 for their locations (starboard 1, etc). A few other shots of the boat, too. Bill

01-04-2013, 11:25 AM
A labor of love... Hope everything checks out ok with the BBCs and you can do a quick turn and get them strapped into the Top Gun. Headers are definitely killer looking and will look great with a little (ok, a lot of) elbow grease.

What's going on with those mufflers? Are there any baffles, or does the diverter butterfly just direct the exhaust out the bottom?

Again, very cool project. Glad to see someone out there rescuing these old boats and keeping up with their history. When I have the space, the time, and the disposable income I would love to do the same kind of thing. Just a little smaller scale, because you have a ton of irons in the fire!

Conquistador_del_mar
01-04-2013, 11:52 AM
You called it right - the Gaffrig air actuated silencers flip the diverter which forces the exhaust down a rectangular opening on the bottom of the tips. I will probably use some other exhausts in the Top Gun, but I will have a better idea after getting the engines installed. Yep, a few projects going right now.

I got an investment boat motor transplant finished this afternoon - new long block installed and running in a 2001 Crownline deckboat. Bill looking foward to all the pictures!.....From what you've discoverd so far, Jacoby's '79 mistress (when built) probably had a nice
optional list when built, not your typical 35' cigarette. You mentioned also it in rough shape now. hope it finds a a good home and
gets some TLC.

It fired right off after sitting for 8 years and ran flawlessly with 65lbs of oil pressure. Hi Pete,
Yep, it was great news to find that the engines made it through the 8 year down time with little to no detectable damage. We will run a couple more tests before our final conclusions. I already ordered some new old school tall aluminum finned valve covers. I will have them and the intakes powder coated with translucent red after they are blasted clean. The blocks will be repainted and some peripheral parts will also be painted or replaced along with the entire ignition system - most likely MSD 6M systems with new MSD billet distributors , spark plugs and plug wires and coils. They will get matching ss breathers, new hoses and new marine fuel pumps, regulators. ss fuel hosing with AN fittings and fuel logs. The starters, alternators, and water pumps will be rebuilt. They also need oil temp senders since the Top Gun has the gauges. I think $1500 per engine will get the work done. The big expense might be the exhausts if I don't already have some that will work. Positive signs were shown today so I was extremely excited - :rlol:Here are the valve covers - http://www.ebay.com/itm/330425747166?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I am slowly getting the parts together for the 572s. I just got back the intakes after being sand blasted and powder coated along with the other brackets that were on the engines. I also had new BBC tall finned valve covers powder coated. The starters and alternators were rebuilt and I bought two new brass water pumps since the old ones did not have rebuild kits. Now I need to repaint the engines and start installing the parts. Onwards, Bill

I wish you luck. I see the Sheepshead Bay reference and it brought me back. I was a Senior in HS and I wanted to move up from a Glastron GT160 to a Donzi 16 OB Baby. My Dad was well........away for a while, and my Uncle (his youngest Brother) stepped in. We drove down to Sheepheads Bay to look at a 1976 16 OB Baby with a 1976 Evinrude 235 and a candy stripe interior. To me, as a 17 year old, it was incredible. We went over to the sellers home in Sheapshead Bay to give him the cash, 5,500 remember it like it was yesterday because I needed that cash to pay for BC ($3,650) in Sept. It all worked out.

Thanks Pete. I think you understand my enthusiasm. It took me much longer to get this close to finally having some engines for the Top Gun, but I had to make some hard decisions like doing entire rebuilds instead of just working the Merlin heads over. I think paying the extra for the dyno work will pay off, too. Did I mention that the Gil pans are 12 qt? I just drained 6 gallons of new oil that we used to run them earlier this year. The shop should be done with them by the first of December. Onwards.

I built the fuel lines today after mocking up the setup so I should be taking the 572 engines to Self Racing in Durant, OK tomorrow afternoon for the rebuilding and dynos.

Engines look sharp Bill. You going to paint the blocks black when your done? Look forward to the dyno results, if you don't mind sharing, what kind of number does the dyno test run?

The blocks, heads, pans and fuel lines will be black with red valve covers, intakes, and balancers. The new bell housings for top mount starters are polished aluminum. There are new stainless mounts for the back sides of the heads that will hold the MSD boxes, coils, starter solenoids, and wiring connectors.

FWIW, Glen Self was the MacDaddy inline 6 cyl builder back in the day, he also did early-on development work for Buick on the V6 projects, nobody knew those engines better than Glen Self and Buddy Ingersol and Jim Ruggles back then... very good choice in engine builder

Thanks Jim. I went to their shop last week where they showed me one of their inline 6 cylinder turbo charged engines that made 1250HP on the dyno! They do a lot of custom intake and head fabrication work along with lots of my type "regular" engine work. They have a relatively small shop with Glen, his son Kevin, and one other guy who do all the work. I felt good about taking them my engines after talking to them for about an hour - nice guys, too.

I dropped off the 572s this afternoon at Self Racing and spent at least 30 minutes talking to Glen Self. He is an energetic, knowledgeable man who is almost 72 now (going on 60). He filled me in on his history which was fairly extensive. Nice guy! My F350 was almost at the overload springs with both engines in the bed. Onwards.

I should add that Glen knew the engine builder of my 572s who also built NASCAR engines - Carl Wegner .
He also filled me in on one of the early V6 engines that he built that would run 10,400 RPMs and got him a lot of attention with GM.

Pete, I would guess the two engines weigh close to 1700lbs with the cast iron Merlin heads and all complete. I also like the truck's looks and amenities, but the new ones get much better mileage - mine is a 2009 with the 6.4 diesel. Glen and Kevin Self have got a very good reputation so I finally went with them after talking to 4 or 5 local shops. I liked what they had to say better than the other shops although Kim Barr in Garland was a close second - I bought a BBC from them years ago that worked well. Glen was boxing up an engine to go to Pennslyvania when I got there today so they apparently have customers all over the country.

Glen Self was the king of drag race straight six engines in the seventies, followed by Cotton Perry

Glen called me to let me know the engines were ready so I picked them up today. It turns out they needed new solid roller lifters, but most of the other parts were fine. He mounted the new MSD 6M boxes and coils on the stainless brackets I had taken to him along with installing new MSD collared distributors. They were rebuilt entirely and run on his dyno which showed they made 672 peak HP at 5400RPM and 693 ft/lb of torque at 4400RPM and were within 3HP of each other. Glen Self is on the right in the picture with me. Onwards.

Bill.........love the black with the red V covers! .....the size of those heads & top ends make the carbs look tiny, but I'm sure
it's got big air flow for those brutes...what's the CFM on the carb?.......How far did you travel for the engines?...Glen looks
better than me and he's 10 yrs older :boggled: ....I like the astec?? shirt.........maybe more arrowhead!

Good sounding numbers Bill!

I was hoping for 750+HP, but the relatively mild cam and low 8.5 CR are the main reasons why they didn't make more HP. Glen told me they should hold together and they ran them up to 5900RPM on the dyno. Callies crank, Oliver rods, JE forged pistons, Merlin heads, Manley valves, Comp Cam solid roller lifters, roller rockers, 12qt Gil offshore pan.

Pete,
Thanks! They are 1050CFM Dominators that had to be totally gone through - 86 jets on all 4 corners and 6.5 power valves. Glen's shop is only a 25 minute drive across the Texas/Oklahoma border from me. In the colder months, just about all I wear are heavy flannel Cabela's print shirts like that one. It is a relatively new design they offer that I really like. Did someone mention arrowheads? lol

As it turns out, I decided to sell my 38' Cigarette. The man who bought it already has a 40' Magnum, but he wanted a faster boat to compliment the Magnum at Lake Dallas (Lewisville). He showed up Tuesday with a red Topkick custom truck to match which was as huge a truck as I have seen recently. I kept the engines that Glen Self rebuilt for me for another day.

I don't see me selling another for a while so you can still use me as evidence that you are not as insane as others - lol.

Screenshot from a video on my Android smartphone after I learned how to import from the Samsung Android S5 to the Mac computer using the Kies program. It shows the huge Topkick better.
