Let's see how well we can do right through to the SB winner.
I'll post Wednesday's current line from the NY post... (no O/U
just point spreads) for the upcoming week's play....Good luck!

Saturday
Saints -3-1/2 ----------49ers +3-1/2
Patriots -13-1/2---------Broncos+13-1/2

Sunday
Packers -7-1/2--------- Giants +7-1/2
Ravins -7-1/2-----------Texans +7-1/2

My picks are: 49ers, Broncos, Giants, Texans...All the dogs Baby!
I'll compulate all the standins on Monday.......Lets have some fun!

Good call. That said,

WTF? "Ravins?!" That's bulletin-board material. ;)

SF, Denver, GB, RAVENS

You think Denver beats New England at home??? God would have to be on his side.

Ravens have to be Texans.

As for the rest it's a crapshoot.

Alright then, looks like I have to go with the home teams. 49ers, Green Bay, New England and the Ravens.

If New York beats Green Bay that would be an upset and San Francisco over New Orleans is only because of a home team advantage.

mike o

Home teams for sure.....

I'm not a football guy so I won't jump in on this one except to say the local talk has been ... 'cautious' about the 49'ers/Saints.

F_in, I'm with you on the shock of the Denver pick, except we're not picking winners here, we're picking against the point spreads. It's the Broncos plus 13.5 points. So, a 34-21 win on the field for NE let's say, is still a win for the Broncos in these picks. Not sure that was clear from your note. The Pats have a pretty awful defense, so a few slips ups and some Denver pluck sets the bar pretty high. Even so, I think it's close to a coin flip anyway.

I wish SF was playing Sunday--that pick scares me the most. Sat forecast 60, sunny, wind 5 mph. Sun 43, sunny, wind 16 mph.

As for my Phiadelphia Eagles now sitting on their overpaid butts at home watching the NFL playoffs....

I have not, and will not, watch a single Eagles game since they brought that low-life QB Michael Vick in; and lied about McNabb's future with the Eagles, & later dumped Donovan Mc Nabb.

I am starting a petition campaign to bring Donovan McNabb back as First string QB next season & dump Vick & his $100. Million $$$ contract ...

scippy

Like Ghost said, It's not who wins, but who covers the point spread this weekend.
And a few of you guys aren't even pick'in at all!.....save the football talk for later.
Just make your 4 pick's from the lines established and we'll see how well you do by
Monday morning........Also, the winner could have a fun little prize at the end.

hardcrab
01-13-2012, 08:34 PM
I think the Ravens will go after Houston and easily get the spread.

I think New England wins by 9 pts.

I think Green Bay squeeks it out by less than the 7.5 pts

I'm rootin' for the 49'ers to win.

..............Please refrain from all jeers and criticism untill Sunday 7;30 PM EST

................. thank you

Good point. I'm not a gambler so I always forget about the points. But I believe the Pats beat them by 18, even after spotting them a few in Denver a few weeks ago.

Texans +7-1/2
Giants +7-1/2

OK......................Marlin275 (with his picks) will be the tenth player in & the cutoff point to this here pool!
This works out really well because if we have a 10 way tie going into the SB........(Don't think all will be tied
but anything is possible) We can draw numbers from 1 thru 10 (10 meaning 0) this combined with your SB
pick should make for one clear winner......Example, Ghost & Hardcrab are tied going into the SB............even if
they both come out still tied, the number they drew or were assigned to ............(Still haven't figured how to
do this over the internet yet) So the tie breaker number you have, would have be closest without going over)
to the final score's second number...................let's say, the SB final scrore is Giants 24 Ravins 21 = total 45pts
Hardcrab had 3....Ghost had 9.........3 is closer to the second numberr 5 in the score of 45...HC wins the pool.

I think Brady was a little PO'd with all the attention Tebow got leading up to the game. It was a complete mismatch and was predictable IMO.

Well, I managed to get the teams right...Just couldn't cover one of the spreads.

I had reasoned that if the Pats won it would be because they played defence...and they did. But, I for sure thought they would generate more offence, then again, I suppose Baltimore played defence also.

I thought the 49ers had this, and actually changed the channel with a couple of minutes left.....Great job Giants!

Ghost
01-23-2012, 10:39 AM
Down this far in the cellar I might as well bet my heart for 46.

So I'll go Patriots blind (before I know the spread).

Even though Big Blue beat the Pats this season, they're giving the giants 3 pts in the papers this morning.
I don't care about the spread, I just want the PATS to beat the Giants this time around. Maybe that'll stop my buddy Charlie from putting the last minute of their last superbowl meeting on an endless loop on the tv every time I go over his place.

Ghost
01-23-2012, 01:49 PM
LOL Maddad--that's funny!

As a complete aside, point spreads are interesting things. A lot of people forget they are NOT designed to reflect the midpoint of the true probability of the outcome. Rather, they are designed to reflect the PERCEPTION (of the mipoint of the average gambling dollar) of the probability of the outcome.

Put another way, suppose the true expected result is that the Giants will win by 3 points. (Meaning, if you could play the game an infinite number of times, half the time the Giants would win by 3 points or more, half the time the Giants would win by 2 points or less, or not win at all.) But the aggregate betting public thinks the Giants will win by 5 points. The casino doesn't care so much about the reality, it cares about the PERCEPTION. Because all a casino wants is for half the betting dollars to be on each side of the bet. The betting dollars are based on perception.

The math of sorting out the perception is trickier than it may sound. Some people bet big and others bet small. The casino wants half the DOLLARS bet, not half the number of bets, to be placed on each side of the spread. So, in addition to compensating for things like "lots of NY betters" compared to other markets, they must also consider the size of the bets being placed.

Pro football is so heavily bet, and stats are so available, that they are REALLY good at it and my guess is that relative to other, smaller betting markets, the "perception spread" and the "reality spread" are usually close.

Less so if you bet something relatively obscure, like college hockey. Where, if you know your stuff, you can probably make money gambling, even with the house rake. The house is not nearly so likely to get all the spreads right.

I wonder if, back in maybe the late '70s, you could make money just by taking the Cowboys' opponent every week? Since the Cowboys were so popular and people tended to bet their side, making their record against the spread a pretty consistent loser?

zelatore
01-24-2012, 11:48 AM
Damn Ghost, there you go taking all the fun out of it again with details and specifics...

As for the 9ers game, I was stuck at the PHX airport and was just going down the jetway when they fumbled in o/t.

<yawn> The superbowl will now be a super cross-town rivalry. Maybe I'll record it and watch some comercials.

Giants didn't do anything spectacular this year.
9'ers got close but didn't make it.
Warriors? Raiders? yeah, right.
That just leaves me the Sharks...

(on the other hand, Supercross looks pretty interesting this year and next weekend is Oakland)

scippy
01-25-2012, 05:12 PM
Even though there's a good indication we might know how these "fun picks" will turn out, ..we'll play right through as we did before
with our spread picks, but in addition we'll also add what we think will be the final score to the game.........those that don't pick the
correct winner, than their final score will be meaningless.....In the advent of a tie this would be the tie breaker...(I orginally wanted
to draw number's out of a hat (1 thru 10) and the closest to the 2nd digit of the final score (without going over) would be the winner.
I'm picking (no surprize) Giants +3.............final score 24 - 21 over the Pats
Ghost..... Patriots -3.............................. final score?
Mike-o.....Patriots -3...............................final score?
