Out with the old, er... uh, sold, and in with....
What can you tell us about the new one? A few extra cubic inches maybe?

ummmmm...keep goin....

True.

Removing the engine turned out to be much more of a project than I thought. Since I had removed the exhaust and crank mounted water pump ahead of time, and disconnected all the electrical, water and fuel lines, I was anticipating a simple, "Remove 3 engine mount bolts per side, undo 6 bell housing bolts, slide forward and lift slightly, rotate 90 degrees and pop it out.

No. That would be too easy. The bell housing was the problem, when combined with the solid engine mounts (which I had attached with 3/8 carriage bolts AND 5200, so they weren't coming off). We ended up having to take off the water recirculation pump, crank pulley and the port valve cover to get enough clearance to rotate then engine.

And only then because we had a real engine mount lifting thingy that allowed us to change the balance point of the engine, allowing it to tilt it enough to make the rotation.

Your truck bed is carpeted!!

"That is not my truck." (Said in my best inspector Clouseau voice.) But yes, the bed is carpeted.

+104 cu in?

No. Staying small block. But think more in terms of 406. . . . :cool!:

No. Staying small block. But think more in terms of 406. . . .

You will never regret this decision, and you'll laugh every time you give it a little gas and your boat jumps to get to the new throttle setting.

Really looking for a more comfortable rpm cruise at 45 to 50 mph. Of course any improvement in top speed won't hurt my feelings.

Glad you are following thru. I think the 406 is a great choice. Cubes rule. But also remember "weight don't break" so go light wherever possible. I think you will also enjoy the build process especially if done with some one else. I am going to do a ski boat motor rebuild this winter with my grandson and possibly a 406 roundy roundy rebuild to a marine application. Keep me in the loop on your progress.

With a 23" Solas and aq drive with 1.63 gearing that all happens under 4000rpms. At those speeds I also get over 3 miles per gallon.

Maddad, very clever, "Just Say 406"

I like it.

I have heard, that you can buy a special hub, splined for whatever you have, that will then allow you to test a variety of different props. While there are limited props available for old style Volvos, there are LOTs of props available for everything else.

I'm thinking the Solas 23 might not be enough prop for the engine I'm building, unless I plan on running it to 6,000 rpms. Not that it wouldn't be cool, as that would be over 75 mph. I would prefer to run the engine at no more than 5,500 for outdrive durability considerations.

If I could get a 28" prop with 15% slip, I could cruise at just about 50 @ 3,500 rpms, and twisting it to 5,500 would yield a top speed of around 77 mph. On paper it all works out. . . . .

. . . .time for lots of speculation over the winter. I'll have it ALL figured out perfectly, until I put the boat in the water.

What heads, intake, cam? Using gm block or going Dart, World Products? What exhaust? If you are going the extra cube route take full advantage of them.

Starting with a 400 block, 202 double hump heads that have been ported & polished, dual plane intake, and I'm thinking Eddie Marine exhaust. That's all I will admit to at the moment. . . . :shades:

Bill, the only thing that might worry me with your plan is the other high pitched props I have seen and used have become handfuls at or around the cruise speed you looking for. The solas does act bigger than 23 the one I tested had about a 25 pitch number so did the 21 pitch i had it acted about 2 inches in pitch bigger and had about a 7-8% slip number.it handled at 50 very stable and solid.I still have that 1.3 drive if the motor is too much ;)

Looking good. And I am a sucker for quality headers. Will she be ready for the run? Still got two months. And before the break-in time and other mumbling starts, I had one hour of run time last year on my gen-2 Potter motor. There will be others like you there this year. Get it done and bring it! Love to see it run.

are those adapter plates for Vortec heads and you built an engine with old school 64's right?

Just Say N20
03-20-2012, 09:20 PM
Buizilla, I'm not sure what the adapter plates are for. These came off a 383 stroker putting out about 475 hp. The seller told me I think these were the first CMI headers with a cut out for easy plug access. Not sure if he was running angled plug heads, as I wasn't listening to carefully at that point in the conversation. We had come up on a traffic jam.

Yes, it is being built with a 1972 400 Chevy bored .060 over, and 1972 202 double hump heads (64cc) that have had some very nice porting/polishing done to them. I haven't spoken to Keith about the cam he has selected, but he is going hydraulic with roller rockers.

He is going to do some dyno break in, and then get some numbers for me.

It will be ready to run in time for the run, BUT, that is my mother-in-law's 90th birthday week end. So we agreed I could go next year. :)

I sold my "new" engine last fall so I could begin this project. Have fun with your rebuild.

Bill,

was thinking last night I keep forgetting although your hull and mine were only one away your hull has been updated to a 290 and trim with power steering so the props I mentioned to you might not be all that rude in handling. You should get the package in the next week or so.

Just Say N20

You should get the package in the next week or so.

That would be great. And yes, Volvo 290 with trim. I believe I am going to have to address the steering at some point, and go with external hydraulic. But I am going to see how the current set up works before making any changes.

mattyboy
03-21-2012, 08:53 AM
power steering too?? the chopper I am sending pulled hard left on my setup to the point where I needed to wedge my arm between the spoke on the wheel and my leg PS should take care of that. The cleaver I could never get it high enough to get it to run where it likes , the trim should take care of that.

Just Say N20
03-21-2012, 11:48 AM
No power steering. Trim should help minimize some of the wheel torque.

i know a guy with the 408 ci windsor and he hits 80 mph and still has more to go but the steering turns....so much torque
