Odd engine choice. Wasn't the '58 Corvette 283 fuel injected? The '57 had mechanical fuel injection.

back then everything deamed fuel inj was mechanical

Yup, Rochester mechanical FI. I looked it up. It was an option:

Standard engine: V8, 283 cid, 230 horsepower @ 4800 rpm
Optional Engine #1: V8, 283 cid, 245 horsepower, two four-barrell carburetor
Optional Engine #2: V8, 283 cid, 250 horsepower, rochester fuel injection
Optional Engine #3: V8, 283 cid, 270 horsepower, two four-barrell carburetors
Optional Engine #4: V8, 283 cid, 290 horsepower, rochester fuel injection
