Three logic professors form a line facing a wall. While their eyes are closed, a hat is placed on each of their heads. The men know that the hats were selected from a barrel that contained 3 white hats and 2 black hats.

The man at the back of the line can see the hats on the two men ahead of him. The man in the middle can see the hat of the man in front. The man in front can see no hats at all.

The men are challenged to guess the color of their own hat. After about a minute, the man in front correctly states what color hat he has on.

What color hat was he wearing, and how did he know?
