The boat looks kinda modern but that drive from the 60's? Also looks like K-Planes. Anyone heard of the boat or drive?

I think P&D produced some knock off hulls. The Stern Powr drive is fairly heavy duty, but parts are tough to find. It is a solid gear bullet drive with a tranny - much like the TRS speedmaster II drives. Bill

Stern Power Drives were made by Marine Drive Systems and I believe they were made in Edison NJ in the 70s. They made both a Standard type Drive and as Bill stated a SSM type drive, Roger Munn ( Naples Fl) ran a set of the SSM type on his 80+ MPH 27 Magnum Sport (BBC) for many years.
As far as I can remember Roger never broke a drive
Roger could tell you alot more about the Drives , if you contacted him iin Naples Fl.

Thank you
Jim

I have not seen a Stern Powr drive in this NJ/PA area for decades.

They were pretty costly when new; & very fast because of the streamlined profile of the lower unit..
They hold-up very well.

Parts are another problem as already stated above.

Wow...1st red one is some funky setup but I bet it works. Second looks like a modded Cobra or ??. So are they still made in the newer forms?

Did a little googling and I guess a company called Sherwood Propulsion Systems in WA owned the rights to the drives between 2002 and 2007. Currently it's

supposedly owned by a Doug DeGolier with a firm called ADM COMPANY. He's currently the manufacturer and dealer for these drives and older replacement

parts.

A friend installed a Stern Power lower to his 20 Cig back in the mid 80's. I believe the boats on it's 3rd owner since, but still running the SP as of a year or so ago. It required a special adapter plate to mate up to the TRS upper and was actually slower than the TRS, but made up for it in handling (Chesapeake Bay).

These drives need to be run like a surface drive to work efficiently.

Yeap...Your correct! The whole transom was rebuilt to blank and cut 3" up from the previous TRS X-dimension. The gimbal housing was actually notched into the gunnel rail. :biggrin.:

I believe I saw that 20 foot Cigarette in Pasadena MD . It had brown sides. It was sitting in a driveway of a shop. I think the shop owners name may have been Wes. He was a big Donzi fan.

But yes, back in the day... it had the 70's style brown paint.

Back in 1975 I started working on nose cone for the stern power drive that I had on my 24' Cheetah. The patern and castings took longer than I thought to get done. I sold that boat and tested them on my new 1976 31' twin eng Lancer, with some succsess. We sent a few to Stern Power that later became the SP drive. I believe the full speedmater drive the SSP was the work of Roger Munn, that does work & at the time was stonger than the Trs speedmaster. Was it as good as a Merc 3a speedmaster ??? But it was easy to work on.

Mark,
Very cool that you designed the nosecone. The first picture sure looks like a 24' Excalibur - same hull? I know there were quite a few knockoffs of that hull design. Bill

Yes Bill it's the same hull. My Cheetah from California was a built in 1973,here is on more pic before I hung the drive. Even back then they were splashing other manufactures boats, buy 1976 Panther Marine in California was making one too. The Stern Power drive started life as the Dana drive used on many houseboats back in the late 60's & early 70's.

Super interesting thread. smidgen too, I always thought that Cheetah had great lines, pretty cool that you were an owner and had a lot of experience with the hull.

I bought this [Cheetah] from Jim Klyem [ Mr. Lancer, Panther, Aero, Predator, & Awsome power boats] :boggled:, it was the very first offshore boat he sold.. All my friends bought them after they road in mine. We bought blank hulls and rigged them our way. Most were set up with the Stern Power drive. My 1975 Cobra [SMIDGEN TOO] IS also a 24' with the same hull as Excalibur but the deck is more like a Pantera, & mine has twin Holman Moody 302's and Volvo drives.

Great ride with the looks to boot , and looked exactily like the one in your pics (post #17 Brochure ) wind screen , life line , ext , ext , only blue , and Mark did your #24 have a padded keel also ?
