Finding your numbers can be interesting, they have been put in several locations. Behind the dash opposite the helm, on the V block for the front lifting eye are a couple. We were speaking about 18 numbers at this weekends run, Mario said he had to scrub the area by the V block to find his. You need your flash light and some wiggling around you will find it.

should be a foil tag on the back seat, what year is this boat ?This was Scott Baxter's old boat, for some strange reason I thought this boat was of the HIN stamping era? I probably have the hull number some where in the club records, John B won a few awards with that boat at our gatherings.I'll check if you can't find it

Thanks for the reply guys....the boat is a 1976....i did look at a 1976 x18 that had the foil tag behind the back seat cushion...but not on mine.

I'm still waiting on paperwork for the trailer before I can pick her up....what a pain in the ass!

Still can't wait...its killing me.

Cheers

a 1976 should have the HIN stamped in the upper right hand part of the transom near the deck hull joint.

What was it..73 or 74 & up they were stamped like today with a HIN number. Some had tags which corroded off like on many Whalers. Luckily Whaler was smart enough to put a second one inside a hatch or ??

My flippen wait is over  my few weeks turned into over a 3 month wait because of some "A HOLE "at Ace trailers.
Had to wait for a compliance tag for the trailer before I could bring it across the border.....

But I'm home with my new boat now :boat: 1400k round trip...so glad the weather was good today, cost me $300 in gas and a hotel room for a night :)

Have to give her a little wash and take the trailer into crappy tire for inspection before she goes to bed for the winter.

What a xmas gift....:woot: 69158

-----They may have been added by a former owner but those lights were a factory option. Frequently used to see the guys cutting the holes for the lights in just about every model made in the 1971 time frame on 188th street......Bill S

Great Donzi 18 ~~~
I like the blue & white color combo.

Best of Luck with her !

Are those docking lights "Morse" brand ?
Usually the "Morse" name is cast-in the outside of the light housings in large letters.
Are the light housings plastic ; or painted pot-metal ?

Those light give the boat personality.
It makes the boat's bow look like a shark .
One guy in my area in the 70s once painted flying tiger style P-40 Warhawk fighter plane teeth on his bow using his docking lights like eyes .
Everybody in the area knew that boat.

Yes, Brad they are Morse Marine Products......also came across the foil spec tags....they are in rough shape...I though I had seen that someone reproduces them ?If anyone knows please pass info on,I would like to get new ones made.
I also have the original brochure...I really like the blue interior....when it comes time for new,I will go with the blue.

A few years back a friend of mine bought new reproduction un-plated bronze "Morse" docking light base castings to replace his heavily pitted pot-metal zinc original units that were on his mahogany 1957 RIVA Super Tri-Tone speedboat.

I believe his "Morse" chromed pot-metal docking lights were much larger castings, & more oval shaped, that those on your Donzi 18.

I will call him this weekend to see where he got them & who now sells these new bronze reproduction "Morse" castings.

I seem to remember a classic boats supplier named Al Schinnerer at

www.californiaclassicboats.com

recasting some of these old boat lights & deck parts.
Al does quality casting & reproduction boat hardware & deck parts work.
He is not inexpensive however.

"Morse" itself is now a part of Teleflex Corp.
I seriously doubt that they can supply any old docking light parts for you however.
I know they don't carry any old "Morse" throttle & shifter parts like Donzi boats used in the 60s-80s..

Brad check out my post on page 2 all the Morse info is there.

I wonder if a LED docking light exists that has a smaller footprint then the Morse units. I'd think they would be cool on a 16 in a smaller format.

woobs
12-14-2011, 07:36 AM
I'm not much on the LED types....to me they just don't look right. But there are plenty of other docking lights that have that old school look...and some a bit more modern.
My buds Cobalt has a nice set from the factory (I'll investigate them).

[QUOTE] My buds Cobalt has a nice set from the factory (I'll investigate them). [QUOTE]

I wonder how big the Cobalt lights are? The one thing that concerns me with some of the others posted is the quality and ability to hold up in salt water. Those Morse units are almost three times more expensive. One thing about Cobalt that I learned when GMCars turned me on to some of there stuff is the quality is way up there.

woobs
12-14-2011, 11:38 AM
Well, sometimes you just have to pay for quality....The Cobalt units are Stainless steel and are a $1,100 Canadian (a $1,200 option on a new boat, but that's installed), but I'm sure they're the best quality you'll find. I like the morse lights though as they look like they belong, time tested design and in comparison $350 looks pretty good!

As to size for the Cobalts.... I can't find exact dimensions, and buddys boat is away for the winter (2 hours away) but you could see from this pic relative size.69179

Thanks for sharing Mattboy....that link is great...I haven't had a chance to look for the vin yet....but did come across the foil tag in the folder of paperwork that john gave me.
So if the boat came with the foil tag do you still think it would stamped somewhere on the boat also ?

Any donzi built after nov 1972 has to have a HIN stamped or engraved on a plate on the upper right side of the transom. Mandatory USCG regulation for mfg'rs
