friend just bought a 2008 38zr brand new with staggered 525's. He got the impression it would do upper 80's, he took it out this weekend for maiden voyage and fought to get 81mph...any thoughts if this about right? thanks!

I would guess that it probably will take a little seat time to get to get used to the right trim and tab settings to find the sweet spot.

First off ? Why is he trying to get full speed out of a boat he just bought?? Also tell him that if he blows one of the "new " engines merc will void the warr due to not properly braking in the engines..they can scan it and see how many hours at what rpms...tell him to get use to the boat first then try to max the boat out..we will also need more info like what rpms he is running,,tabs all the way up for max speed..

All of the 38ZR's w/525's run between 88 and 92 top end, depending on salt or fresh water. He may have too much tab down or not trimmed up enough. If she's broke in already, then 81 is too slow, he needs to play with her a little more. Good luck,

tom

A stock ZRC runs 93-94 mph so I would think the ZR would only be a few mph slower.
