Who insures your Donzi?

Hey Guys,
About 5 years ago I dropped my insurance through Boat US. My lake was dry and my boat was high and dry on it's lift with no way to get it. So I asked for storage insurance and they said they don't offer that in Florida, So, I cancelled it. I just couldn't see, or afford paying $1200 a year for a boat I could not use. When I called back a year later, they quoted me something like $4500 a year, and said I couldn't make a claim for a year, because they had gotton so screwed with claims after the Hurricanes. Allstate and state farm told me they wouldn't cover it, to fast. I am getting a quote from Haggarty which insures my '68 Lincoln Continental. So I was curious what you guys are paying, and with who??? I have a clean driving record, no accidinets or tickets. (man what is wrong with me) 95% of its use is on my lake I live on in Florida. I've only put 114 hours on it in tens years since the restoration.

Edit: If I remember It was a agreed value of $15k, I don't remember the liability coverage.

Allstate just dropped the Criterion last month because they said as of July 1, 2011 they don't insure boats that old anymore, even with a good survey :bonk:

so, because of that, I dropped EVERYTHING toy related with Allstate (2 motorcycles, 3 boats, motorhome, moto trailer) and changed it ALL to Progressive....

I go through Foremost because they are the only one's I have found that will insure my 22c for and agreed value if total loss happens

AMICA, house, cars and boats. My X-18 is $350/yr, but I did need a survey for them to insure a 1978 boat. They did tell me that if I didn't have everything else insured through them that they would not have insured it.

I have always used Allstate on all my boats. They just covered my 1973 27' twin engine Magnum with out a survey. When my 1975 Donzi Doral is ready they will cover that one too.

I have Progressive through USAA, $370/year for $50K. Before this I had ANPAC who was a little higher but would also insure a 70-75 MPH boat.

I have also had problems with older "Classic" wooden boats & insurace.
Every old boat I ever tried to insure needed a survey first.
Be sure to get an "Agreed Value" policy on your old Donzis.
This will cover the boats true value ; as well as what money you actually have in it.
If you don't ~ In the event of damage, or a loss , they will only pay you peanuts based on the boat's supposed "Book Value" .
What's THEIR "Book Value" on a 40+ year old Donzi ?
According to their book only a few $100. !

When I got the original policy I had a survey done and we agreed with the $15k value. I enjoyed the survey process too, I learned a few things and he noticed a few things I overlooked.

my '76 16ob is $192.5 for liability only.... other than hurricanes, i just don't see enough risk to pay the higher rates for full coverage....

and beware of agreed value policies, some of them say they're agreed value but then have a trap door clause that gets them out .... some won't accept your stated value, even if you have all the receipts from a restoration (BoatUS, for example... and they say they're FOR boaters!!)

USBoats for towing - that has saved me multi hundreds - Yet farmers for full coverage upto 35K replacement 425.00\year in CA, also very important boat is stored at my house which may have a carry over - If house burns down and takes boat, etc etc - signature details the boat

Progressive for $250 annually. Agreed-to value is $18,000 ('98 18c). One claim in five years, which was promptly paid. Claim was for striking a submerged object, which bent the prop and final shaft.

Allstate for approx. $117/year but we have everything with them and for many years. The umbrella policy with them even carries to the boat. Having said that, we are in NJ so our actuarial profile is different than that of Florida's. Also, our replacement value is only about $10K, which can also impact the cost.

:spongebob:Progressive for the Donzi , American Modern for the Pantera...both are agreed value policies.

Donzi is full disclosure for its actual horsepower and speed with an agreed value of $48,400 on the boat and $5000 on the Trailer.

I use Worldwide Marine out of Grand Ledge, Michigan

The Policy includes a Coastal Navigation limit of 75 miles Offshore or closer, also Roadside Assist..

Its not cheap @ $961/year but it actually has come down a few hundred in the last 4 years of so.

I have never filed a claim on either boat, so I can't speak for the experience...what I can say is I also have Boat US - West Marine for on water service/towing... and roadside coverage. So I sleep at night and I feel pretty good no matter where I am.

Fortuantely or not, Dwight and others have been kind enough to perform towing when fate has interveined in my boating plans...so I have not used the service...

I have several boats insured for a set value, ie what I told them to insure them for... a '88 Donzi 22C, a '87 Correct Craft, a '90 Manitou pontoon, and a '86 Dynasty...all for less than $500 per year. Basically insured for what I have invested in them initially, not maintenance, etc. since boats are going to cost you every year, ie normal use and upkeep. This is through Allstate and I have all of my cars, home, etc. insured through them. They have never threatened to stop insurance, but then I haven't had a claim in a long, long time... :nilly:

$26 a year as a part of my home fire policy - an add-on umbrella with 1 Million in coverage. Total cost of the 400k fire policy and Donzi = $910 a year.

Agreed upon value and they know the HP and speed along with disclosing I run 3 or so poker runs a year. It's not cheap but they know their exposure, State Farm and the major names wouldn't touch it.

1974 Baby at $20000 is $388.00 per year, The trailer at $2000 is $32.00 ($2000 deductible)
1956 Arena Craft at $45,000 is $424.00 per year ($4500 deductible)
1974 Riva at $20k for $338.00
Fino $50K is $609 $5000 deductible

The trailers have a $25.00 deductible.
Been with them for 15 years. I even had a 1967 Triumph TT special insured for $75.00 per year.

Amica turned me down, even though I have the house and 6 cars with them.
It runs about $350 per year.
I tried Boat US for my 22, and they turned me down. No coverage for the time being.
Will face that next Summer.

With Progressive do you go to them directly or use your broker? Also, are they stated/agreed value in advance? In other words the boat gets stolen or sinks and they send you a check for $20k.
