24 Baron?

Greg Guimond
07-22-2011, 03:19 PM
Looked bigger then 24'. Had twin I/O's that must have been shoe horned in there. Last registration tags were 1988 and no transom numbers. Deep V with outer strakes ending well before the transom.

24 Baron had the camper front deck. This boat does not. Inside pic and windshield looks like a 20 foot Baron but hull pic is not. I have a 24 Bertram and the upper stem line in the pic doesn't look right for a 24.

Maybe a 28 Baron

Greg Guimond
07-22-2011, 03:22 PM
It was 5am in the morning but I would say it was around 27 feet or a bit bigger. Really nice lines and that transom must have been at least 4" thick.

Ok, that 28 Baron makes sense. Shame to see it just sitting there. What was the beam on that model? Looked to be narrow, maybe even 7 feet.

Looks like it was a super heavy layup. And the entry deadrise on that bow was something you just don't see anymore. Too bad to see it wasting away. When I saw it made me think of HIGH LIFE and his Mag conversion. Mike would have been all over a project like that :frown:

Probably nowhere as heavy a layup as one might think I suspect. I've been through a lot of classic 20/25 and 31 Berts that were made well before Bertram went with this non-Hunt designed hull and they were a whole lot lighter than I would ever have imagined. In fact , I walked on the hull insides of a late 60's 31 recently that had the rear sections of the stringers cut out and the hull flex was scarey.
But I have to admit , those 24 and 28 Barons are cool as hell .

Interesting info guys, and thanks for the photos Joe. It really looks cool with the exception, as Ginger mentions, that crazy high life line. I tried to expand the spec sheet but could not see the beam. Is it 7' even? Does the spec sheet show a deadrise?

The baron has a dead rise of 28 degrees at the stern and a beam of 7 feet. Great rough water boats. Here is a link to my baron project http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/classic-offshore/247548-1970-bertram-baron-28-project.html They are built to last forever with a very thick layup and a transom that is about 2.5 inches thick.

Thanks for the post Captain and some job you are doing! 28 degrees of deadrise, wow. I thought the old Sutphen's had the steepest at 26 degrees and then an even plusher ride from the old school Bertrams. Talk about wave crusher  It almost looks like the Baron 28 interior could be a sit down design if you wanted that. Very elegant lines on your hull.

[ QUOTE=$originalposter]{$pagetext}[/QUOTE]

The small blocks make for a very tight engine bay that must be a nightmare to work on. I've kept the original inline 292 engines in mine and built them up for a little more power. The original engines and boat only have 170 hours of total use on them so I thought it would be a shame to replace them. Here is a picture of the inline engine bay. Its a joy to work on, you can climb inside, sit down and work in comfort.

I was the one who spotted the Barron that started the thread. When I saw it last it was high and dry at Norwalk Cove Marina. I'm not sure if it is still there, and if in fact it is for sale. Just stumbled across this thread about these BEAUTIFUL 28' Bertrams. Been around Bertrams (and a fan) all my life and have never seen this model. I am g-r-a-d-u-a-l-l-y looking for a boat in the 25' to 30' range but the only thing about this boat that might make me a bit hesitant is the narrow cockpit and engine compartment. I saw that ya'll mentioned a 25' Bertram...are they as rare as these 28's?? As I have never seen one of them either

Dragging this old thread back to the top as there was a gentleman (he actually posted early in this thread) who did an incredible restoration to the same model 28 Baron. That is a cool picture smidgen too, although it looks like that 28 Baron has stand up bolsters while the owner of the fully restored red 28 has a sit down set up. I wonder what the original seat set-up was from the Bertram factory?

olredalert
12-29-2012, 09:10 AM
----Greg,,,The standard and only seat available from Bertram was the sit-down seat. These bolsters were evidently added. I dont think that Dick Bertram ever felt that the 28 would be an effective race boat as he was building the longer, very competitive race boats as well. But, a few enterprising racers saw that the 28 had a chance to be competitive. Thats now two 28s, I believe, that were raced out of a very low number produced!
----Im also guessing that the lifeline that came standard on the 28 was removed due to the rules back in the day, as was the windshield.......Bill S

Agreed, I like the "sit down" as well. For various reasons. And to a degree, I think it adds control/stability for the people aboard. I also wonder if Bertram squeezed the seats toward the middle for more control, to cut down on effects of roll on the people in the boat. Dunno, but wouldn't surprise me.

----The Baron I spent so much time on in and around Nantucket Sound was regularly used to head over to either Nantucket, Marthas Vineyard, Hyannis, Yarmouth, or Falmouth.
----The sound is often rough and many, many times we found ourselves standing rather than suffer back jolts, but that not withstanding the sit-down seats fit the boat perfectly. I dont think Barons were ever envisioned as anything more than a day boat back then. All that bow and there was nothing forward of the dash but the fuel tank..
----I know as I spent about 8 hours early one spring sitting "ON" the gas tank, forward of the dash, out of gas, but at least out of the weather, about 2 miles off the Osterville cut because my pal Al (the owner of the boat) swore that the boat was filled with fuel the fall before when the boat was winterized. He was sadly mistaken as we ran out on our way back from a bar in Hyannis. Nothing on board but the anchor, lines, and about 4 gallons of 8 month old very cheap wine. You can imagine what ended up in the bilge that night. We wailed away on the s-to-s all night but didnt realize that the antenna wasnt attached. A confused fisherman found us about 6 in the morning, still drunk and hurling!
----All that and I still love these 28s. They will handle just about any water you can go out in. If its too rough for a 28 Baron you best not make the trip!!!!!!........Bill S

Oh, I know those motors--that's Shawn Tyler's boat. Amazing work. I know the 292s were rebuilt with some extra cam and were expected to be in the 270-300 range. I was going to have the same done with mine but the gentleman in MI (who did the ones in that Bertram) went radio silent right about when I was arranging delivery to the shop. I seem to recall he owned that Bertram and then sold it to Shawn, but I'm reaching back aways. Anyway, I hope he's okay, seemed like a really good guy when I talked to him.

I read the whole thread and didn't see anything about how the power turned out or what performance was like (other than that it did very well in big seas). If anyone runs across any details, I'm curious.

I'm the builder of Baron as seen on OSO http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/classic-offshore/247548-1970-bertram-baron-28-project.html We have been contemplating selling it and are trying to come up with its value. Any Suggestions? As seen in the thread nothing has been left untouched. I feel it is safe to say it came out far better than the original. I built the boat for my close friend and the former president of Bertram, Peter Rittmaster. He was also the original designer of the boat and a successful racer for Bertram as well. We built the boat the way it should have been built if you didn't have to worry about things like a BUDGET. We have just over 50k in materials including the original cost of the boat. That does not include any of my hundreds of hours of labor. It comes with a aluminum dual axle trailer, Three sets of props 23p 25p 27p, two complete spare outdrives and another for parts. When we purchased the boat it had 170 original hours and we have put 20 on since it has been completed. This boat has timeless lines and is mistaken for a brand new boat all the time. People can't believe it is over forty years old. At this time I'm just trying to come up with it value. I'll attach a few pictures of the finished product. The older gentleman behind the wheel is Peter.

I love the boat, the work, and the choices you made. Seems like for the right buyer it should be worth 75k+ easily, but it might take years to connect with that right buyer (with the right taste and no need for financing).

When you play the price game, on the open market, I'd guess she'd sell in a week if offered at 20k. Within a month for 25-30. And so on. It's a good time of year to sell. A survey might help in making prospective buyers comfortable with value and price. I also wonder if there might be some interesting ways to market it to get closer to proper value--maybe call Boating/P&MY/etc and see if they'd like to do a piece on the boat. The more professionals actually scrutinize it and then share and publicize the reality of the job you did, the better. And maybe someone with stupid money will consider it for a yacht tender/toy.

(And thanks again for all your info and advice with my inline sixes. As you might have seen above, I ultimately went to a single when I lost contact with the gentleman up in MI who did yours, but I really appreciate all your help.)

Regards,

Mike

Great information in that post captaintyler. It might be worth looking at the auction houses to see what is happening with Barrett Jackson, Mecum, Gooding and the like. See what the schedules are, and make some calls to get a feel for options. A resto like that needs to get in front of an audience with high emotional attachment and plenty of f u money.

I concur with these guys. Your Bert is amazing, but the potential pond of buyers (at least for what it's worth) is pretty small. You need to find the guy that can a) appreciate the boat for what it is and b) stroke a check for it. Not impossible by any means, but challenging. Skip the ebay / boat trader type stuff and get it in a magazine or maybe to an auction. Really cool boats have been selling for short dollars at auction, so you would have to find the right one or keep a reserve on it.

The attention-to-detail on the refit is amazing - truly beautiful boat. Good luck!

That is a spectacular restoration job you did!! I would think $65,000 will not scare off an interested buyer - possibly more. You will probably just have to start at an asking price you would feel comfortable with. Like you already said, there are not many out there especially restored so nicely. If you do decide to put a price on it, please let this forum know. Bill

To bad I live on the wrong side of the North Atlantic. Quite a long trip to just "go over" with my fingers crossed :)

Haven't been there in a year or so, but when I asked in spring of 2013, the old man told me he was finally going to get to it........

Amazingly, it looks like this mint, fully restored 1970 28 is coming up for sale....................

I'm the builder of the Baron. We have been contemplating selling it.

When we purchased the boat it had 170 original hours and we have put 20 on since it has been completed. This boat has timeless lines and is mistaken for a brand new boat all the time. The older gentleman behind the wheel is Peter.

.
I wonder if the restored 28 Bertram Baron below ever ended up selling? One of the best restorations to one of the best looking hulls ever and 28 degrees of deadrise to boot. Steepest V I've ever heard of in a race boat.

I've sold a few Bertrams and there was also a company called Outlaw in the Northeast that made a splash of the 28' Barron. I sold the hull molds and three hull and decks that I bought from an estate sale in Indiantown, FL about five years ago. Sold a nice 20' Barron and even a 1964 31' Competition which is under full restoration at TNT right now in North Miami. If you have deep pockets I have a 1977 38' Competition "Kevlar" ex: Vincentive for $10,000 and will listen to trades ? Thanks, Cadillac (772) 285-2266

Who cares. Those are not true Bertrams.

Greg, this boat was at Antique Boat America this summer. Do you stop in there from time to time?
It was nice in person but the cockpit is really tight. But it's nice no doubt

I believe the 28' Bertram that Bill & I found & sold back to the son [Chip Miller] of it's former 70's owner will start it's restoration back to it's racing heritage . As of now Chip may restore it with a new modern Merc powertrain but keeping it's 70's look. After seeing how Chip restored William Clay Fords Donzi Criterion I know this Bertam is in good hands.

No Bert, I have never been there. That is in Clayton, NY, correct? Pretty cool that you got a look at the Bertram 28 up close when you (and the boat) where both there. Nice to see it saved

Another one saved. Super! Is it true that these Bertram 28 hulls had a dead rise of 28 degrees?

Actually , I'd like to know if that's true or not too .

I'm pretty sure that I once read that by the time the late 60's - early 70's rolled around so much experimenting had taken place that designers and builders , and that included Don A , knew that once they went past 25 degrees it was counterproductive and Ray Hunt had the 24 degree formula right , right from the get go .

----I think the Barons hull is 26 degrees, not 28. I spent several of my younger summers on one. You could find us any weekend somewhere between Nantucket, Marthas Vineyard, Osterville and Hyannis. Anywhere there was a bar open on the water.......Bill S

Correct Ocean Reef, very good eyes Bill. New Years Eve was great fun for us and the children. Here is another picture of the Bertram.

Are the stacks fuel fills that are T'd so you can fill from either side or are they breathers?

Another wowsa boat I'd love to go over in real life.
Sort of like a B/S Hornet on steroids . It may not be 'practical ' but I bet you feel like a million $ every time you get in the thing .

Greg, it has multiple tanks. I was crawling all over it when it was being rigged.
the owner is really nice. He's "Bert nice". That's about as nice as you can be without making me puke!

----Greg,,,I should have gone over New Years as I can see blue skies. Instead, I went on Vintage Weekend. Big mistake! We were there for a week and never saw the sun. Rained every day. Saturday, the day of the show it rained 6, yes 6 inches. The really nice owner of the Bertram has either a house or a condo at OR......Bill S

Geez Bill, holy chit ...... 6 inches of rain! I have to say that the weather at OR was darn perfect. We just got very lucky. Wake up, 78 degrees, mid day 83 degrees. The Bertram was tied up behind a condo there. My friend Tom and I had to poke around a bit on the golf cart to find it after we told the gals we were going exploring. We stayed looking at the boat for a good 30 minutes as I knew I had stumbled onto a special piece of history. After we found the Bertram of course we had to reward ourselves with a Reef Cup before Dinner that day. Picture below from New Years Eve courtesy of our 7th grade daughter Cara Grace.
