Origional colors

Im going to be painting soon and I was wondering if I could get an origional code from 1966 Red? Or even a sample that I can have matched to.
Reds are tricky.. They can be too bright and Orangy or go the other direction and be too dark and Maroonish.
Any ideas on where I can look or get accurate info?

the original red was called lucan red, then they moved on to cooke red

check ferro

but i would paint it a shade of that color you like

If you can find an unfaded area where the old Gell Coat is still in good shape you can have a paint supplier computer scan it for a perfect color match.
Look for an area that was covered & out of the sun.
Wet sand & compound it a bit to remove any oxidation first.
I assume since you are a professional painter you wil be using paint instead of Gell ?

Yes im going to paint it. Imron most likely, and I will use new imron Clear coat on her also. They have 3 reds they mainly use, Im thinking fire red is closest to origional... Check out the link its a cool little color simulator

Im just going to go with one of the reds off the imron chart...The boat is sanded and a mess to try and get origional color off of it

I would highly recommend the Imron red that I used on my 1971 Donzi restoration - 51078 is the number. It is a rich blood red that came close to the original red - maybe a little richer red, but not at all orangy. Bill

When I changed out the transom assembly on your boat's older sister I ended up with a chunk of hull that has never seen the sun. You are welcome to borrow it for color matching.

I am with you on the red can be orange. I wanted the same thing on my drag hydro. I ended up going with a 09 viper red. It is damn bright, and not an orange tint.
