Based on Don's recommendation I used 3M VHB foam tape. Covered all the surface. He said it would never come off and it does add some extra dimension

They look great.

May be a dumb question, but I'm curious how you did the cutting/placing of the tape on the backs of the letters. (I like the idea of covering all the surface, but I'm used to seeing stuff stuck on with just a couple spotty patches of tape.)

I sort of imagine peeling one side, putting strips on, then pressing the letters down on a board and tracing the outline with an exacto knife. But I don't know if that's precise enough, or if it would leave a little extra material for a permanent dirt line around the edges.

The tape I had found before was only in a 1" roll, so I had to do it piecemeal. I haven't had any issues with dirt collecting behind it that I've noticed.

The VHB tapes come in a lot of varieties, but they are commonly used to mount auto trim. If you've got an auto body supplier you're friendly with I'm sure they could help you with some as well.

The other way I've mounted them was with good old 5200. This was what I did first and they're still on my boat's transom with no sign of going anywhere, but the tape was easier to use and less messy. Plus with the 5200 you have to be sure to secure them in place while it sets up so they don't sag on you. The tape is more or less press and stick.

I piecemealed it as well. I covered as large of an area as possible and then trimmed with sissors or scaple. Then cover more area...continue.

It took a pretty long time to complete - at least a couple of hours.

I struggled with figuring out to place them on the boat with the right spacing. I put the lettering on poster board and moved them aroud until spacing looked right. Traced the letter outlines, taped posterboard to the hull and marked / transferred alinement points using grease pencil and carpenters square

That's a real nice offer. Thanks RedDog, but I don't want to bother you with it when my local autobody supply store probably has it in stock. I'll drop you a line if I have trouble finding it local.

Thanks again!
