Does anyone know the actual number of x18 boats made? I have heard numbers from 100 to 400.
Does anyone have a current/partial/or old listing of hulls and owners as of now. I would like to put something together and monitor it and see how many I can find.

The real question is how many still exist?

Can't remember the Donzi.net member that put this great document together?

I started this thread. I recently aquired an x18 listed as hull DMR70873x and it has what appears to be the original "made for" plate on the dash. I just went and looked and can't find the hull number on the transom. Is there a possible different location? Maybe it was glassed over? Any input is appreciated.

Ralph:
Try looking under the lip of where the deck meets the hull on the starboard transom (ie. just below the rubrail). If you run your hand under the lip you can probably feel the indentation of the numbers. If you do, you can then look up under the lip and read them. I thought mine were glassed over too, but that's where I found the HID.

Ralph that isn't a valid donzi HIN looks like your missing some numbers.
it should look like Dakari's with a DMR.where did you get that number from?

dakari's boat

DMR donzi marine racing
18 model length
136 136 of that model built
05 may
76 1976
X X18

they built alot of X's in the first two years a 73 was supposed to have the transom stamped if the stamp is not there then the transom may have been replaced or the boat was built prior to nov of 72. if that is the case then the hull number should be written on the backside of the dash or found on a foil sticker in the backseat area.

serial numbers on the drive and motor always help and the tag on the tank if it is original help as well.

pics always help

mattyboy:

I'm not sure exactly when they started hiding the numbers, it probably differs by hull/model style. On my 74 Corsican it is hidden under the lip - so they did this on some models prior to the 80s. My Hornet is a 76 and the HIN (HID) is stamped directly on the top right transom - not hidden.

Rob,
I think i mis-understood you. when you say under the lip you mean on the outside of the boat correct?

What I was referring to was the USCG in the 80s made it mandatory that the hull have two HINS one on the outside upper right hand part of the transom the other hidden on the inside of the lip of the deck in the same area. I guess they did this as a backup if someone with ill intent covered or removed the transom HIN. I also guess at first they and the mfg'rs only knew .
sorry coffee hasn't kicked in yet

I went out and measured the location of the hull # on my X. On the starboard side, underneath the lip, the HIN starts @ 5 1/2" in and runs to 9 1/2". Mine was also partially obscured by a poor repaint job, but I was able to find it and read it. I also have a foil tag behind the rear seat-back which has the engine serial #, I can't remember if the HIN is stamped on the tag, I'll look later.

FYI, as a manufacturer , you can hide 2nd HIN anywhere you want. There has never been any criteria from the Coast guard as to where it has to be hidden. As long as its out of sight. Its all about stolen property with them (CC):alligator

It is stamped under the lip and my first posting was incorrect. The actual # is

do you have to tell them where it is?? is it something they keep on file? or do they call you and say we think we found one of your stolen boats were is the hidden hin???

They come around every 3-4 yrs to inspect the boats for the last 12 yrs. They are not in coast guard. The coast guard sub contracts the whole program out now for the last 12 yrs Mostly are retired CC lifers, My dude thats been here the last 3 times is from the finger lakes area. They ask where the 2nd # is hidden and I show them. Never been called for stolen stuff. Po-Po has, but never for needing a duplicate. In the 70' - 80's. When the real CC guys where doing it. I didnt see them for at least 15-20 yrs from 1978 on. So if your asking if they (CC) ever had- has a data base for real old hin's. I doubt it very much. The driest spot on the boat is where folks put the second # usually...
