Pop quiz:

Converting a late 80's Merc multi-wire alternator to a later-model single-wire unit.

The large orange wire goes to the new power post and the black goes to the chassis ground.

But what to do with the old red/blue stripe and purple wires? I'm pretty sure they can just be taped off, but wanted to double check with one of you guys who messes with these things more than I do.

Fix - I'm betting you know this one off the top of your head!

Tape them back individually.

The pruple wire goes to your volt meter so that has to be hooked up to a power source to read and the red/purple is a keyed ignition hot wire to excite the old regulator to charge. I'm gonna use the red/purple on mine for electric fuel pump. You could find an isolated non grounded terminal and put them together so the gauge reads when the key is on.
