What would cause an excessive amount of oil to come out of the valve cover vents into the carb? gen IV 454

Blow by is the term I have always heard. Bill

Hey Bill, how are you?
Both engines were recently rebuilt, one has 60 hours on it and the other has 20 hours on it, shouldn't the rings completely seated by now?

Doing well here. I would think so unless you used synthetic oil during the break-in period. Maybe someone else has some thoughts.

Glad all is well.

No synthetic oil was used.

Excessive oil level above the full mark can also cause this condition but i'm sure donzi dude will post here to debate and contradict my opinion once again. :screwy::rofl:

That was one of my thoughts, I have a Milodon 10 Qt pan with a Milodon dip stick, however it takes 12 Qts to bring it up to the full mark, 13 with the filter. I think something may be off with the dip stick.

+1 on too much oil in pan,,also if you dont have baffels in the VC's by the gutted pcv valves that would do it too..how much oil pressure?

bigdawgchallenger

there is baffles
45 to 50 psi warm.

Oil change time, only putting in 10 plus filling filter.

But do you have a windage tray below the crank?

yes, its built into the oil pan

You might try running the engine with the RPMs up a little and see if the oil is splaterring out of the valve cover holes. Sometimes the baffles don't work like they should. Just a thought. Bill

The engine's oil level is most likely too high ; and you are just over-filled.

BUT.~~~
Just as a test~
Pull the PCV valve (Positive Crankcase Vent Valve ) and any vent breathers off the valve rocker covers & run your engine just to make sure that there really is not a piston-ring blow-by issue going on.
Test running this way should NOT produce much real pressure or spitting oil on a good & tight newly rebuilt engine.

Stuck piston rings can also cause blow-by.

Let us know how it goes after a few hours on the new oil change, lets hope that fixes the issue!
