My brother and I are looking at a 2000 22 classic 454 mpi with 150 hrs. We took it for a ride today, the boat looks and runs great. The owner wants 20k. It does not have a trailer. What do you guys think? Is this a fair price? If not what would be fair?

Remember it does NOT have a trailer.

Thanks

You can get a nice aluminum trailer for $4500. Just because they want $20K, doesn't mean they are going to get it. If it were me, I would offer $17.5K and hope to settle at $18.5K, then track down a good trailer.

I do plan to offer him less than what he's asking, but just in case he will not come down, is 20k to high?

There are alot of factors that would determine if that was a fair price. If it is real clean, Kept out of the water, Not bottompainted, What does bilge look like? intierior? And probibally most of all get it checked out by a local surveyor... then ask yourself is it worth it for you to enjoy at that price.
Best of luck and pics would probibally help

There's always exceptions, but I would guess the average for a pre AMH boat would be $10K-$18K, w/a trailer.

For someone asking the upper end of the price range should always expect a survey to justify the price.

After doing some reading on here I guess I need to tell y'all it is a 7.4L mpi not a magnum. How much does that matter?

This would be my first Mercruiser all my expericence is with outboards, so don't hold back on your thoughts.

WhiteBoy
06-07-2011, 09:26 AM
The more I read on here the more I think I sould stay away from the 7.4L and look for something a little stronger. Are the 496's worth having?

Trailers are cheap, $2500.

It will still be well powered with a 7.4 and that engine will last forever. A 454 Mag or 502 Mag would be more fun but more money too. 496s are newer and will be more money as well. Fine engine tho. I like the 502 better.

The trailer issue, the smaller 7.4, all good negotiating points.

Saltwater use is a top priority. Avoid it or offer much less if so. There are plenty of fresh boats out there.

Here's a nice 502. Pier 57 delivers too!http://www.pier57.com/200838DonziZxfWhitee3x300.htm

IDK though. The more I look at it I don't like the trailer or Donzi logos and it's saltwater.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to offer him 15k and see where it goes from there. I like that pier 57 boat, but I'm not looking to spend more than 22k.

They will deal and no one has a better reputation than Pier 57. I bought my boat there.

Using my zip code in Indiana, this is what NADA says. change the zip to yours and add any options to see what the book says. Depends on where you're at and what options and how clean she is. Like my ole man once told me, the book never wrote me a check, but you can use it as a guide. Good luck,
tom

Holly Cow, nice boat for a reasonable price. Carl, do you have a contact at Pier 57? I'm suggesting my coworker look at this boat as a move up from his 1996 18C.

Nice boat...looks like you'll have to get creative adding hydraulic steering with the way they mounted the K-planes.

Just a thought...

Well I didn't get the boat :frown:

We offered him 16k. He sold it this afternoon for 20k. After all the info you guys gave me, I'm not to worried about it. I think I can find a better boat with more power for not to much more money.

As far as the pier 57 boat goes, how would that 502 compare to a 496 merc in the "keeping it running right" department? We don't want a boat that needs to be worked on every other week.

Thanks.

If the info is correct, that is not a stock 502. A stock 502 mag was 415 HP, not 502. I would inquire about that.

As far as a 496 goes, it was an OK engine from what I understand. The 502 was solid and you could do more with it.

If that 502 was built right, it should run a long time without problems. Bet it flies also.

I'm going to disagree with most here, and state that 20k would have been a fair number for a CLEAN 2000 w/o trailer, without seeing pic's or being there in person it's hard to gauge a perfect value, but it seems the Classic series is creeping up with the pace of the used car market as well, which the last 6 months has been about 15-20%... the Pier 57 boat has about 40k in hull, trailer, engine and pieces so a mid 20's number is very realistic there as well... the cheapo days are gone and the low ballers are losing out on some solid value deals.

Jim is probably right as he looks at this stuff a lot more than I do. It'd still be nice to have a trailer though.

Iagree with you Buizilla,,, i paid more than that for my 01, that still may make me wrong but my boat is the newest used boat i found, i wanted it and bought it, sometimes you gotta pay what u need to get what u want,,, i know i did pay more than i should have,,, oh well its mine now

I'm not sure exactly where the prices are because there is always a spike right around this time of year on boat prices... summer is upon us and people are willing to pay more now than any other time of the year. I think we will really know in another 6 months if we are back on an upswing. (hopefully we are!!!)

here are some others for sale.

They do make a 502/502. That would be a great engine. 73mph, my guess. Should have hydraulic steering above 70.

Just joking, I did like that boat, but the more I learn the more I want something a bit faster than the 7.4.

So whats a fair price for the pier 57 boat? Keep in mind it will cost me $1600 to get it here.

A bit higher I would think if it really is making 500hp at the crank. That's 450-475 prop so high 70s with lots of trim and a MPlus.

502/502 was a GM crater.... great engine, never Donzi factory offered

BIG mid range, but need upper 5000 rpm's to be happy

A fair price on the 22 is a number that 2 people agree on, not for us to decide, I will tell you that you CANNOT build that engine from scratch for 15k, so the trailer, hull, tabs and all else is only 9k, stupid cheap deal.. no brainer if cabbage is on the table..

for the last time, chase the Volvo boat from NH for more info, the Space Shuttle is more fragile than that drive :shades:

Same boat. Diff motor and drive.

I would kill for that drive on the 22.

My opinion is that it is a pretty good deal.

Ask for more photos and see if they have the maintenance records and history. Remember, NH boating is a short season, ask how many hours are on it.

Go with cash and drive it home.

Phone number is from northern Mass., boat appears to be on the border with Maine. Nice drive.

In the spring of 2008 I was looking for a 22C and there was a 2000 available on 'Boattrader' with the same package..385HP & the Volvo DPX. I didn't know anything about the DPX drive and as such was not too interested. The owner dropped his price to a point where I was now interested, so I had a friend of mine make a post on this site looking for feedback on the DPX.

It all came back +++++. It has integrated hydraulic steering(no torque steer.. I can take my hands off the wheel at 65 mph). Volvo says that it is rated for 600 HP. Apparently it's about 3 mph faster than a stock Bravo and was about a $3000. option.

My boat runs just a little over 70 mph on GPS and runs like it's on rails.

Just make sure that it's the DPX version of the Volvo drive and hopefully has the 'E4' props.

I live in Florida on the intercoastal, so I only run in salt water. Can a boat like the pier 57 handle all salt all the time? Or should I stick with a mercrusier?

Thanks for all the help.

zelatore
06-13-2011, 08:17 AM
If anything, I think I might say the Volvo package was better for all salt use. I believe it's a 'full' system while the Merc is a 'half' system. Meaning the Volvo's exhaust manifolds are fresh water cooled along with the engine while the Merc still passes raw water through the manifold.

Both will still have raw water in the elbows of course.

As for the drives themselves, I've seen equal numbers of each killed by poor maintenance in salt water, so I'm not going to give either one points there.

For that matter, do we even know if either/both/niether of these boats has fresh water cooling? It's a must-have if you're going to be 100% salt.

it would be a shame to put the P57 boat in salt... the engine parts won't like it

All the OEM closed cooling systems I have seen, Volvo and Merc alike, were half-systems. The only full systems I have seen were aftermarket. Always been curious why the big boys didn't offer it.

I'm pretty sure some of the inboard stuff is full; not so sure about the stern drive stuff though.

Ahh, I was only thinking about sterndrives. You're right. Crusader, for one, uses full FWC.
