how the oil temperature is taken on a gen IV 454, is it taken as it leaves the engine (hottest) or when it returns to the engine (coolest)?

Hottest oil going out is what you want to monitor.

Already cooled oil temp readings returning to the engine would do you no real good.

250 is to hot, have you checked your oil cooler for debris? Losing a few tubes to junk could do it and still not show as an engine over heat condition.

I just put on new oil coolers on both engines. They were used, but clean. they are approximately 20" long and 2" in diameter. What else could cause high oil temp? I am baffled. I'm using a 12 Qt pan. The engines were rebuilt this season.

If you want more heat removed, Make sure the water is flowing the opposite direction of the oil in the cooler.

with that said, what brand oil and weight are you using?

I check my oil temp with an infra-red heat gun aimed at the oil pan and it is about 190* after hard running. The manual says that 220* is the max. 250*?:shocking:

This is going to be a good thread.
