prior to the stoppage in production in the 80's they made approx 700 hulls up to that point . when the 16 went back into production late 89 early 90 under OMC they were massed produced. Now they are custom only the total production numbers are over 1000.

thanks for the information . when you say over 1000, is that including the 700 pre eighties boats?

Jason,
to answer your question how many a year you need to look at the era especially for the 16.

In the early days they made a lot, by 68 they had made over 400 hulls so they were making approx 100 16 hulls a year. Then during the Chisholm era they became more of a high end "custom" type production company. From 68 to the stop in production they made approx 300 more boats making less than 30 hulls a year. There are other reasons for this too. they had alot of different models and the 18 really took over as the entry level donzi.

In the 80s they made NONE! Then in 90 model year OMC re-introduced the 16 now with starboard steering the molds were pulled from a splash being made at the time. OMC was a mass production company the boat was given the name 'sweet 16" production numbers and HIN had changed at that point. after 1984 gone were the running totals in favor of the yearly total. This new format makes calculating total a bit hard without info from the mfg'r.

When AMH took ownership in 93 they continued the 16 production but added the 2+2 seating in the mid 90s. they continued to make both types of 16 until 2000 ish . At this point they dropped the sweet 16 from production as well. only the 2+2 classic was produced then in 2007 they re-introduced the sweet 16 for a year or so then dropped it again. Now any classic is a custom order they are not Production boats anymore.

current ownership should have records for their run since 93,

How many Donzi 18s have been built as compared to the 16s since they were both first put into production ?

take the fair market value of a benchseat hornet divide by 2 multiply then by .13456 :rolleyes:

Typical cryptic answer from you~
What else is new ?
I should have known better than to expect a serious answer from you sweet little 16.
You just seem to always like to just start an argument.
Not taking your "bait" :shark:anymore.

SG,
I guess someone who only gives cryptic answers would know what one looks like :yes:
If you have a question on the production numbers of the 18 ask it in another thread not in a thread about production numbers of the 16

Jason,

sorry if the answer I gave on the 16 wasn't clear or if it was confusing . If you have any questions please ask them. :)

No problem and thanks, and by what you wrote about the 18 classic i would say that there were about 1400 -1500 ever made . close ?

the 16 had a one year head start but the 18 got a decade in production by itself.

3200 is not correct...

the correct answer is nobody really knows the EXACT amount, since all the ownership cycle records were not handed down properly or complete.

that's the best answer, there may have been some overstating in actually production numbers during the ownership transitions too before HIN's.

besides the early boom years and the mass production of OMC the classics have been a relatively low production boat ( 50 or less a year in each model). If you had access to the old registry here and went by hull numbers in a given year prior to OMC and the chris craft donzi that would give you some general ideas.

IN 1969 16 hull numbers were in the 500 range and 18 hull numbers were in the 300 range
By 1977 the 16 were in the 700 range and the 18 were in the 500 range
but by 1980 the 16 were still in the 700 range and the 18 were there as well.
so for the first 16 years or so ( 64-80) judging by hull numbers some 1400
16 and 18 had been built not including the 16 baby or the x 18 or corsican ( all of which were born and died in that time frame). If you add those to the numbers , you'll see they were pushing out on avg over 100 hulls yearly in one form or another in 16 and 18 feet.

Great info.
Thanks SL16!
:wink:

Anyone have any idea where the old registry data is?

SL16 thanks for sharing your insight on production numbers, did you work for Donzi?
FWIW although I don’t know what month my old ski sporter was built the hull number is 16600. The motor has the stamped HM metal plate with HM CP number EOHM-4042-1-RW-I/O 290 4V. All numbers match the original VIN foil sticker attached behind the rear seat cushion. Less than 100 boats a year thru 1970 sounds about right.
E= 351
0= 1970
HM = Holman Moody

Seems like a pertinent question to me... :confused: The informational & sufficient replies to the OP caused me to wonder the same thing myself.

Somehow I get the feeling if SG did start another thread, he'd be chastised for overposting :bonk: Geez

YEP~I agree.
This is yet another example of why many of the great former forum members & posters that were once always here have chosen to abandon this website in droves since 2009.

The very last person standing here should be sure to turn out the light .

Cutwater, I found it extremely ironic that silverghost found one of my answers cryptic. In a post about a benchseat hornet he said that he and others had come to a fair market value on one. When he was asked how he got that value he stated from 3 specific boat sales . When asked what those 3 specific boats sold for he didn't answer.

The reason I said post in another thread was that infomation would be best posted in it's own thread. A year or two from now when a new member has the same question do you think they will find the answer to their question about an 18 in a thread about a 16??? Yes I think this info is valuable and deserves it own thread.

BobbyD the numbers I posted are to show that 16 production started fast and furious then slowed down. The 18 started a little later but eventually caught up and surpassed the 16. as an example your hull 600 in 1970. 6 years 600 hulls a 100 16 hulls a year avg. Now from 70 to 80 they went from 600 into the 700's say they made another 200 hulls being generous. 10 years 200 hulls that averages 20 16 hulls a year . bit of a difference there. Very rare to see a 77,78,or 79 model year 16 they didn't make that many during those years leading to the stoppage of production.
the info I have I found here on the boards just have to go find it and keep track of it.

Jim was correct the records get harder and harder to track down as they passed through different ownership. There were OMC classics made at the chris craft plant in Indiana, with chris craft HIN's. Those records probably got tossed once OMC sold.
