Artie,
That is much more than a "little project". I remember having to replace a couple side boards, the king plank, the splash boards, and the entire transom on my 1939 Chris Craft 17' deluxe runabout about 25 years ago. That was a lot of time and work, but your project makes mine seem easy. Do you have a steam heater for the side boards? Bill

Resorter I'm guessing?

I started my biz with some wooden boats as well.. There is still some magic about them that keeps them cool.. I do a lot more glass these days in comparison, but we still do some here and there. I have an old Chris in out shop now getting some stuff done and had a Gar Wood in last fall...

Anyway, cool project Artie.. :)

And I don't care if those screws are going to be filled over , I still want them in uniform !

What a neat project .

Jamie / Lakeside Jamie , yes it is a Resorter, and to tell you the truth i have had the boat in storage sitting in its orginal state planking , hull side's, decks , cover boards , ext , ext , trying to sale it because i have been way to busy in the past & this (spring) to do much of anything on her, and figured seeing it is now in my garage , and has not sold i will replace the hull side's instead of giving the boat away to tire kickers , if you know what i mean . Bill , i will be making a make shift steamer for a few planks in the future and the funny thing is ...... the beauty of working on a wooden boat is........ after working on glass boats all day long , i can come home and work on it never picking up a Grinder or have to suit up .:hyper::hyper:

WOW !
What a restoration , or should I say re-creation project.

I remember vividly in the 1960s "Uncle" Jack Thompson & his crew at Thompson Boat Works NJ using a long steam box to soften & liquify the lignin between the wood's cellulose cells in a new mahogany plank so it could easily be bent & spiraled into shape on the hull.

What a great childood memory.

Build a steam box & steam generator, ~
Get a big pile of clamps & a few strong & fast friends and go at bending planks.

A friend once built a crude steam box out of a long 6" dia PVC pipe with caps.
Drill weep holes on the bottom of the pipe.
Add an internal shelf rack

1" steam hose & fittings.
Old gasoline & gas fired plumbers
stove~
And build a crude boiler from a heavy steel 5 gallon can.

Steam time usually 1 hour per 1/2" thicknes I was once told.

Ginger:
You have more guts & talent than I ~~~to attempt this total Century Resorter restoration/ recreation.
My hat's off to you .

I love these old clasic Mahogany runabouts.

Good Luck ~
Keep the progress photos comming.

Brad , very funny that you mentioned Thompson Boat Co , because well over forty years ago that is where i got my start doing fiberglass repair on boats when the plant moved to St Charles Mich . Brad , i also love the old Mahogany runabouts and seeing i am 59 now i have also been tossing the idea of building a runabout from ground zero to finish from a set of Glen-L Marine plans along with doing a few other project boats (fiberglass) , Donzi , Cig , Sutphen , or a 69 Sea Ray SRX Pachanga . Brad , after looking at one of your threads ( New Antique Toy " Boat Project ) it looks like you just might have a little project in the works also ,and thank you for your idea's and kind words .

Ginger:
As a young kid I used to "Poke-around" all the great & famous boat-yards in Southern New Jersey.
Thompson Boat Works, Ventnor, Longport Marine, Hoffman's, Grieff's, Holtz's, etc,~etc.
There were dozens of old mahogany Chris-Craft, Gar Wood, Hacker, Sheppherd, Century, and at least one old & rare Dodge Watercar, just sitting in those big old indoor storage sheds.
Nobody wanted them anymore at that time.
At Longport Marine there was an 18 foot C~C Cobra with the hercules tripple carb flathead six, and a 21 foot Cobra wih a Cal Connell Cadillac Crusader V-8 dual quad race engine.
As a young kid I had no money $$$~
The 18 Cobra was listed for sale at $700. & the 21 Cobra listed at $1100.
Many of the older mahogany runabouts you could have had for FREE; or fo the yard's storage fee epecially the utility like the C~C Sportsmans.
I saw many mahogany runabouts end-up in the various yard's burn piles.
Very sad sight indeed.
I was given some of the old deck harware .

Some of the Glen-L designs are fantastic.
Glen-L used to sell pre-cut frame & transom wood kits to go along with their great boat plans.
A friend has his late Dad's 3/4 finished 26 foot tripple cockpit Glen-L mahogany runabout project. I doubt he will ever finish it.
It came with pre-cut rame & bent & shaped transom.
Just put the frame kit together & add your own mahogany planking.

I am now 56 and used to ride my 20 inch bike to these great old boat yards.
I knew "Uncle" Jack Thompson Owner/founder of Thompson Boat Works & Arno Apel, son of Adolf Apel the famous three point hydroplane inventor, of the world famous Ventnor Boatworks very well.
These famous old-timers were great to me.

NOW~~~
If I only had a time machine to go back and actually BUY a few of those fantastic old runabouts that sadly went to the burn piles.

Ginger:
The more work you do on a project like this~
The more you will want to do~
It never ends~
I have been there many times over 30 years on wood boat restorations.

I find it very hard to "draw the line" myself .
I guess I am too much of a perfectionist to be able to make any money on these restorations ?
Today I pick & choose my projects & limit my restorations to very rare boat models that are in fairly good solid shape.
When I do finally decide to move-on and sell the finished project at least I can get most of my money back.
To me it's about the project itself~ and trying to save a bit of our past boating history.
It's a true labor of love.

Great Boatshow photos !

I love the old mahogany runabouts.

I can still remember the great smell of fresh spar varnish on all my Dad's old mahogany boats each & every spring.
Great smell that you could always smell 20 feet away from the boats.
I still have, and use, my Dad's old favorite $30. badger hair varnish brush.

Do you use any sort of Mahogany Filler Stain on your planking ?
Some like Interlux filler stain~
Some do not.
We always used it .

What brand of spar varnish do you use ?
Do you use any wood sealer first ?
Do you use the roll & tip vanish application method?

Brad ,i apologize for the misunderstanding , and the reason being is ...................this was not a boat show but somewhat of a tribute to Grand Craft considering they were built here in Holland Mich and have closed there door 's with one last boat being finished ( Commuter ) by some of the Ex- employes who are working on finishing the boat for the person who ordered it .Brad , to be totaly honest with you .this is the first wooden boat i have done in years .............other then bright work , and the fact of the matter is ......... i have used just about everything over the years from Interlux compass varnish ( new ) Schooner gold ( new ) Z spar , Hi build captians , Flagship , and really have been tossing the idea of using Epifanes or maybe spraying it using Awlspar made by Awl grip ,or there Awl -brite Plus Varnish that is buffable or just doing it the good ole fashion way using a roller , and a brush . Brad , i also will be using Interlux filler stain for this boat considering it was recomended by Paul Miklos who is the editor of Thoroughbred, which is the offical publication of the Century Boat Club .
