So I'm in the process of doing a lot of work to the boat, 1976 2+3 with a TRS. I'm building a nice stroker motor for it, rebuilding the trans, new halon system, deadman switch AND full hydraulic steering. I picked up a dual ram kit from Paul Everett and it's really a pretty nice kit. We started getting ready to install the steering and ran in to this:

Turns out the water intake is located DIRECTLY where the bracket for starboard ram is supposed to go. Oh joy. To make matters a little more difficult, Donzi glassed over the hardware inside the engine compartment, lol. Not that big of a deal since I've passed the point of no return but my question is, what would be the ideal scoop and location? Any thoughts?

BTW, does anyone know if there is a direct quality replacement for the chrome rings around the exhaust? I may as well change those too.

Pretty sure Stainless Marine has those beauty rings.........Ed

I asume that with the TRS outdrive you had a big block Chevy MK IV 330 HP + engine in there.
What size stroker are you using now ?

I love the old TRS drive~~~You will be glad you are keeping it !
Far too many are being removed today in my opinion.
I find they are bullet-proof & you cannot beat their smooth shifting.

With these very small Donzi transoms you seem to be always short of any transom mounting "real estate footprint.

There are many great new & better stainless steel compact high-performance low transom mounted water pick-ups out there.
I bought one from Rex Marine a few years back.
It was a nice small & heavy duty unit~~~
Check the Rex Marine online catalog~~~
Eddie Marine also online..
They both have new transom mouted exhaust outlet tips, bezel rings , & transom mounted muffler tips also.

Jamie from Lakeside, a forum sponsor here, is another supplier !~~~see his advert above !

That big old Mercuiser heavy cast TRS water pick-up has got to go !
I had one of those on my old TRS/ Big Block Formula 27 !

Now~~~ if you only had more transom space to mount new trim tabs while you are doing all of this transom re-rigging ?

Here's a SSM 1" pickup on the 22 TR.
IMHO, the Stainless Marine is one of the best, best finished, strongest, and versatile pickups available.

Relocate the pickup closer to the drive and you will have room.

Holes are filled, transom is painted, parts are ordered, Merc II trans has been rebuilt and is in the mail along with the gatlin gun oil cooler which I'll use as a sprinkler for the drive.

Well done!

Thanks GCarter! We decided just to clean everything up and start over. The boat was repainted just a year ago so it was really easy to match the orange color.
I've ordered a Stainless marine, high speed pickup and am going to use a 45 degree water dump right about the TRS drive that will expell the water from the oversized trans heat exchanger on to the drive. KC Marine out in Washington was the guy I used to rebuild the trans. The good news is that there was definitive signs of slippage so maybe that will be more, new found speed once it's back together. The guys at KC have developed an oversized heat transformer which they call the gatlin gun:

http://www.kcmarinetr.com/uploads/images/gatlingGun.jpg

I also decided to get rid of the elctronic shifting on the TRS since it's known to be problematic and I have replaced it once already. Kurt at KC pointed something out to me. He said just because the trans is in gear (forward) doesn't mean everything is OK. He said that these switches can oscillate, something I've seen before, it'll just move back and forth a small amount. He said when it does this, there are oil journals which aren't lining up properly and can cause damage down the line. Just another interesting thing I've learned about these Merc II transmissions. He did say that the drive and TRANS was good to 750hp, easily and probably a whole lot more with a boat my size. The weak link is reverse with the MERC II since they're small planetary gears that really get whizzing under a little throttle in reverse. Not a problem in my case, I'm not docking a houseboat. :)

I received my hardware from Stainless Marine, the highspeed pickup and the dump. The dump comes polished, the pickup was just plain. I spent half an hour cleaning it up with a scotch brite pad and am sending it off to my friend who does electropolishing of stainless, should come back looking great!

The pickup looks good. I've no experience w/that model and was wondering what it was really like
I'm surprised it's not polished, everything else I've bought from them has been.

Gc,

I'm happy with the quality of the pickup, it's a little more substantial than I thought it was going to be but that's not a bad thing. Terry at Stainless reccomended this style for the speeds my boat might be hitting, he said there is a lot less cavitation with this style.
I do have a question about placement of this pickup. Where is the ideal location? I know I obviously need to avoid the two main stringers but where should I put it in regards to the prop, I don't want it to disturb what the prop should be doing.
Unfortunately, my idea of using the water dump as a sprinkler isn't going to work. I should have looked at it before ordering, there is no room above the TRS drive to mount it so I'll have to explore other options.
Here is a link to my friends site incase anyone ever needs any stainless to be polished. It's done by electropolishing which is polishing of material by removal of material. If you can get the stainless one smooth finish with a scotch bright pad, it'll come out looking like a mirror.

Take a look at my old Minx and you'll see there's absolutely no issue w/the prop. It'll be at least 2' away from the pickup.

http://www.donzi.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24272&d=1159816499

Placement......it needs to be perpendicular to the bottom w/all the screw holes inside the stringers.
Also, the front edge of the pickup pipe should be right at the bottom of the hull.
Here's a thread where I installed one;

Thanks George,

What's up with putting the screws in the stringer? Is that standard practice? I figured I was just going to put it where it appears to be good and away from a stringer then thru-bolt it through the transom? Is one technique better than the other? Is my idea a bad one?

I want to rephrase......don't put screws into the ends of the stringer.
Through bolt between the stringers.
Sorry for any confusion.

It's been slow going, with the engine rebuild, waiting for parts, etc. Well, it looks like Friday is going to be the day for the sea trials! Yeah!
