Make sure you get one with the proper number of input shaft splines !

The very early 1960s units had fewer splines on their input shaft . I had a 1962 71C that had this issue on an old Graymarine V8-C 238 HP Fireball

Be careful~~~~there are a lot of older units still out there !

Rotation is easily reversed on any velvet drive. ~~~so this should not be an issue !

These velvet drive marine gears are easiy repaired & rebuilt also.

YOU PAY THE FREIGHT AND I HAVE ONE FOR FREE.
I bought a brand new one for $1400. It was cheaper for me than getting the one I had rebuilt. The guy wanted $2400 to rebuild. Let me know. I will weigh it and let you know the weight. PM me.
