I'm looking to spend $4k to $5k on a used Triumph Thruxton (or Ducati Sport 1000, but I do realize I probably won't find a Duc for that price)... Anyone here have one or know of one for sale? I've found a few online, but selection is verrry limited, and honestly I'd rather buy one owned by/inspected by a board member! Shipping will most likely be a necessity.

Excelent taste you have there.

However, even as a multi-Triumph owner I have to say the Duck is a whole lot more bike.

Of course, you can get a Thruxton up over 100 hp with a little help from these guys: http://www.triumphperformanceusa.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=8&sort=20a&page=1

I understand the 1087 is a real animal!

Take a look over at Triumphrat.net - they have a very active twins forum.

No argument there. One day I figure I'll have to buy a Duck if for no other reason than the sound.

I saw a Duc on the new Tron movie. It looked and sounded great.
I don't know that much about them, so I had to enlist the help of Chachi.
I liked what I saw. I found some Sports for about $7K.

OK, that fist vid is labeled as 'sbk Arrow system', but I swear that's a Leo Vince from the logos on the mufflers.

And just to keep this from being a complete Duc love fest....My Triumphs don't usually need 3 hits of the starter to get running, and the license plate doesn't flap in the breeze.

I'm just sayin'....

That thing did sound pretty mean. Had to be more going on there than just pipes.

A bit overkill for a Multistrada I'd think, but it would sound great on a Monster or superbike.

Ah screw it - blow your rainy day fund and get a Norton.

Actually, I like the standard look better than the all black on this bike.
Sounds pretty good too.

Not exactly the same style bike you are looking for but probable a better bike overall.

Yes, Ducati's are nice. Thats why I own one of those too. But honestly the Aprilia with its Rotax motor has way more torque down low and is way more fun to ride. The race pipes on this one sound super sweet as well.

Thanks! I've started looking around some of these forums, but the plain fact of the matter is that there aren't that many Sport 1000 or Thruxtons for sale... I guess it's a very specific market. I'm just going to try to be patient. This is my first bike! It will mainly be used for evening and weekend rides along the river here in Knoxville.

George - I saw that movie in IMAX... was waaaayyy better than I thought it would be! Can you believe it actually had a plot?? :bonk:

The Streetfighter is a pretty bad machine, no doubt. I'd love to play with one for a day or a week, but I doubt I'd buy it. I think it might actually be a bit to much of a sportbike for my day to day riding.

Back to the original post, if you can't find a Thruxton in the price range you're looking for, you could consider a regular Bonneville then just cafe' it as you want. Solo seat, gold valves for the front, pipes, lower bars or clip-ons, cams and/or big-bore kit.

The standard Bonnie is a nice enough bike - nothing wrong with it. But it's not a thriller in any way. They are pretty easy to find in your price range though, and then you could mod to taste as funds permit.

D#mn Mike - that's a tough break! How much did you lose in the fire?

Battery charger huh? Wouldn't have expected that. I wonder what brand mine is...:boggled: Luckily, the only one I leave running on a regular basis is the battery tender. Haven't heard of one of those burning down a garage. Yet.

fwiw, I've stayed away from Ducks because of the maintenance...more specifically the valve adjustment.

ah, but they've lengthened the service intervals quite a bit in recent years. I think valve adjustments are something like 12K now. And on a bike like this where you don't have to strip all the body work it would actually be reasonable to have it done, or do it yourself.

I heard they lengthened them from 6k to 75oo, with no change in materials.
I've never adjusted them, but understand its difficult because they are set at zero.

but what do I know...I ride a 'Guzzi. And don't maintain it!
