While rummaging through a box of snapshots the other day I ran across these. This is the (Jeff Magnuson) replica of the 1928 Gar Wood race boat Miss America VII. 28 feet long by 7 feet wide. The replica was launched on July 2, 1999 at Lake Winnipesaukee, NH.
The engines are 1650ci Rolls Royce V-12s made to look like 2500ci Packards. They make a combined 1224 hp. The drive is through FNR transmissions and V Drives and the rudder is about a third of the way back from the BOW. DJ

EDIT: Pictures deleted by author. (2/16/11)

John, I found it amazing how they made the RR Meteors to look like Packards.
Of course if one could see a Meteor next to a Packard, you would see the Meteor is probably 18" shorter than a Packard. But the weight is probably is about the same since the RR meteor is cast iron.

Jon awsome boat and i can almost bet that is one* LOUD* ride .

I got to ride in that boat late in the summer after it was launched.
On start up it was a bunch of very loud cracks..then it settled doen to a low frequency rumble. Underway the first thing that came to mind was ....sitting behind a couple of Furnaces..exhaust gases..heat from the pipes....etc. It was late September and a little cool. Warm in the cockpit. At speed the sound is just a low rumble..I don't think the revs were much over 3000. It makes me smile every time I remember that ride. NB

The Original boat set a record in 1928 at 92mph with two 1M-2500 Packards with a total of 2000hp.

The Replica was expected to do about 75mph, although the day I rode in it we were not going that fast. Later on during testing it became evident there was some serious propeller shaft whip. Some extra shaft support solved that.

After that there were problems with the SS exhaust stacks cracking at the welds. This has since been rectified.... I don't know what the final top speed achieved has been. John

Below is a picture of the last Gar Wood boat, Miss America X. (1932) She set a record at 124.91mph. 6400hp Total. Miss America X still exists...BUT the engines are GONE.
