today I had to remove the wooden floor in one room of my over 100 years old farmhouse which I bought some weeks ago- the wood was rotten after all the time. I was digging a bit into the ground to get some space for insulation and discovered some old red bricks which seem to show the original floor plan of the house. In one corner something twinkled and look what I found:
an old and heavy silver spoon and something else covered with a lot of rust... do you think I should dig a bit deeper?

Did you buy the house from a widow who's husband disappeared?

If so, I wouldn't dig deeper...:boggled:

Very interesting, I enjoy stuff like that, use to dig up Indian arrow heads when I was a kid....:)

Axel,
About 20 years ago, I found an old pistol buried in my Dad's front yard using a metal detector at his house in Memphis, TN. It was in much worse condition than the one you found. I figured it might date to the civil war era here in the US. I still have it in a display cabinet. Bill

yeah, will try to figure out what kind/year of gun it is. I am not a weapon expert but the house is built 1910. If this was still the first wooden floor the gun must be before first world war. Gonna clean it a bit and put it in a display in my work room.

The French standard issue weapon was the Pistole Revolveur Modele 1892. It was manufactured by numerous state-owned factories and also in Belgium and Spain.
Popularly referred to as either the 'Lebel' or 'model d'Ordonnance' it resembled the British Webley, although it fired six 8mm rounds. Deemed eminently reliable the Lebel remained in common use throughout the Second World War.
Whereas the Webley was snapped open for the purposes of loading, the Lebel's chamber swung out.
The Serbian army made use of French surplus stock, such as there was, for their own wartime use.

The spoon would also have some markings on the back that should give you a date and maker on that.
