They must never go on out of the water.Major drawback.

They must never go on out of the water.Major drawback.

Almost every LED transom light works in or out of the water. The older style transom lighting only worked while submerged because of heat... I think those were Halogen.

As far as how many, etc. that will vary greatly based on brand and quality. I have done a ton of research and am still confused. Ocean LED seem to work well, but are mega $$$$. there is another brand that seems reasonable, can't recall the name, but I was reading the other day in the OSO Formula area... I think that is where I saw them.

Perko seems to make the best value stuff... but are not as bright. There is also a super easy install drain plug LED light out now... no cutting, etc. but not as bright.

I've installed several models of LED and Halogen lights on yachts. Trust me, you want to use LED. Much less power draw, much easier to install, and no maintenance.

I just ordered a pair of OceanLED 2010's in blue for a customer this week. They aren't cheap, but they do a good job. In this case, they'll be mounted on the sides of the hull to supplement the 4 he already has on the stern.

As for mounting location, on something as small as a Donzi I think you'll want to mount them as low as you can in the water. The units I work with are typically pretty big, but they still only use a 1" thru-hull for mounting and run on 12v. They're very easy to mount - just drill, seal, install, and pull the wires. Done.

If you do decide you want to go with OceanLED, drop me a PM - I might be able to get you a bit of a deal depending on the model.

BTW, be warry about the photos you see on the manufacturer's websites and the claims they make about how far the lights project underwater. I've never seen them light up as much as they appear to in the photos. Granted, if you're in Florida or the Bahamas where they have crystal clear water you'll have better luck than we do on the west coast. SF Bay isn't exactly known for it's water clarity.

Here's a pic of a boat we did with Ocean LED stuff sitting in some relatively murky water on the Oakland Estuary. This is 65 Marquis with 3 lights on the transom and one on each side. The lights are between 1 and 2 feet deep, and the swim platform is about 5 feet deep to give you an idea of how much projection we're getting. Sorry for the crappy pic, it's all I had handy. Compare this to the pics above - the manufacture's photos show nearly as much illumination as I've got here, and all from one little drain plug light? For reference, each of the 5 lights installed on this boat is about 6" and has about 20 LEDs in it. They claim it's eqiuvelent to a 50w halogen. That's rather a bit more than the drain plug light, so I'd take their photos with a grain of salt.
