There're a number of mechanical indicators available from Gaffrig, Livorsi and others.
These are very simple devices that use a push pull Morse control cable that moves an indicator up and down a scale.

Hi Dan, what kind of trim do you have on the Volvo drive?

The reason I asked is most old Volvo drives don't have trim. They have an electric tilt set up for raising the drive for trailering or shallow water, but not trimming underway. The pin with three holes to choose from on the transom shield are the only trim options. Hope this helps.

No problem, and yes the tabs will get the nose down. Try putting the drive on the third hole(all the way out) with the tabs all the way up and out of the way. Point it straight into some nice choppy water and give it all the throttle you have. You may find that more fun than playing with trim, tabs and pretty much anything else.
