The local coffee shop is owned by a car enthusiast who runs about 5 or 6 of these each year. Free coffee, breakfast, t-shirts, raffles etc...Tons of nice cars and then a 30 mile (or so) rally through nice, winding roads. Today was just about perfect - crisp, clear and great foliage. I spent the rally slotted behind three 12 cylinder Ferraris and ahead of a pack of newer M3s. Trying to keep up w/ the Ferraris in the straights (in my '66 MGB) was a lot like trying to keep up w/ the 22s during the Dust-off!

Hard to say what the highlite was this month, probably the two original Cobras.

Always really liked the 246 Dino...the RED one. Technically NOT a Ferrari ..according to the factory..but had the bloodline nevertheless. I almost bought one (A "Driver") maybe 20 years ago. The 246 had a 2.4L V6 making 195 HP. An earlier version had a 2.0L V6 called the 206..

I was (then) 6'1" and 180 pounds and it was a tight fit but reasonable. A "Good" one at the time was about $42K. DJ

Price NEW in 1972 $14,500.

EDIT: The faired-covered headlight "glass" is missing on this car.
EDIT 2: I correct myself. It seems some were covered and some not.

BTW: There was also A FIAT Dino with the same engine...not so sporty.

I believe the euro-spec cars had the plexi cover head lights.

The Dino was lovely. What's nice about this event is that it gives those of us w/ "entry level" classics a chance to get close to cars that you don't see every day and which are pretty much not attainable for most of us (myself included)! Here's my MGB getting cozy w/ an alloy-bodied Healey.

The Sunbeam should have a 260. This one now has a 289 - the owner was very apologetic!

Agreed, the Webers would look good on my 16 and the Cobra would look great in my garage! And while I'm at it, it would be nice to be in the Rolling Stones too!

Shoulder a lot better but still only 75%. I'm into my second week of PT and range of motion and strength slowly returning. Not cleared for fall sailing or even bike riding though. Been restricted to 12 oz.(occasionally 16 oz.)curls!

My first Heally was a 1956 100-4 like the one in the picture. The center body panel which surrounded the hood and grill, and extended back to the windshield, was aluminum. I found this out went I bent the front center section and tried to get a body shop to hammer it out without using Bondo. The windshield folded down and aft for racing. Mine was a three speed.

I learned much later that when aluminum is "stretched" once, you can't "unstretch" it. :bonk:

There was also an ALL aluminum "Le Mans Heally" with a louvered hood and leather tie down straps. My second Heally was a 1959 100-6, followed by two AH 'Bugeye' Sprites a few years later....with a '63 Jaguar XKE Roadster in between.

I came close to buying a Dino in about 1973, but my memory is that it was right at $25,000. I must have gone to the dealership at least 50 times over a year period - so many times that a couple salesmen knew me - lol. I still love the lines on it. I remember that the Pantera was the second best cornering sports car at the time behind the Dino. Bill

I think I remember the Dino V-6 engine went into at least three different cars....
The dino, of course.
Lancia Stratos rally car.
And a non-descript Fiat sedan.

I think most know the Stratos was NOT a street car....
The Fiat sedan must have been a real sleeper.

The Fiat Dino was offered either as a 2 dr coupe or a spyder. Not bad looking as a convertible but nowhere near as pretty as a 246.

Jay - I don't rememberm what the shoulder injury was, but I know it takes forever to get over them. My sister-in-law was a gymnast who tore up a shoulder and had corrective surgery. Took forever to get past the post-op PT. Heck, less than 2 months ago I high-sided one of my bikes and busted up a wrist and arm. Now I'm still doing PT trying to get full range of motion back, and haven't been back on a bike since as I'm supposed to stay under 10 lbs with the arm.

George - Lancia Stratos. mmmmm....tastey! But, truth be told, I'd rather have a replica than a real one (at least for driving). I believe an English outfit used to make 'glass replicas that you could power with either a Fiat twin cam or if you were creative, an Alfa V6 fwd powertrain. In the back, of course... I'll take mine in that funky Italian lime green color from the 70's please!

Of course, for a lot of things I'd rather have a replica. A really good GT40 replica with a stroker turbo'ed aluminum Windsor would maybe be worth a grin or two as well.

One of the neat things today is you can own VERY GOOD replicas of "C" and "D" Jags, Daytona coupes, Cheetas, Scarabs, and a few others I can't think of now. For a fraction of what one of the originals would cost, you can own and drive a whole stable full of these fine replicas.
I'd take a useable replica anyday over a museum piece.

My '63 XKE (same color grey) had covered headlights. It wasn't long afterward that the US Government decided that covered headlights weren't safe because the headlight beam might get distorted. BTW, those headlight covers were made of laminated safety glass just like a windshield..not plastic. The roadsters far outnumbered the coupes such as the one here. DJ

The last year or so of the Sunbeam Tiger had a 289, which I think was maybe '66-'67. These are quite a find in good shape and go for $30,000 - $50,000 depending on condition. Not the fastest and still had the Brit electrical glitches of the period, but sound and look good. I keep looking for a "driver" that I can afford, but haven't found that pup yet. :pimp:

In 2010 - we had a new Gullwing AMG Mercedes, a McClaren SLR, a Bugatti Veyron, several original Cobras, an awesome late 40's (?) Mille Miglia Lancia that was once owned by the Berreta family but the GTO will be tough to top! Insane.

To his credit, the owner and his wife actually participated in the rally although they did wear earplugs! I probably would've done the same - it was pretty loud!

Yesterday was the first of 6 scheduled Caffiene and Carburetors for 2011. While far from a nice day, at least it didn't rain. And there were still about 140 cars, trucks, bikes in attendance.

Those "in the know" suggested that this 1956 Arnolt Bristol 2-Litre was Best in Show. Alloy bodied and Bertone designed, hard to disagree. This same owner also brought his Mille Miglia Lancia to an event last year.

Love those Miuras. They look so mean and low close up. Is that an S?

Wow. That a real 959? I remember when they came out, they couldn't get any kind of permission to even start them. I think maybe it was Steve Jobs that had one stranded in a warehouse in Oakland, that fell into some kind of free trade zone that was exempt from the restriction....memory is very foggy there. Think Otis Chandler had one too, but he had to get permission from the EPA or something to even start it on his property.

I think the 959s shipped to the US had a very small lip spoiler at the bottom of the big basket handle spoiler.

I love the 328!!!! I've only seen a couple of them in my life.

Is t hat your MGB next to the Ferrari?
If so, was that intimidating?

jl1962
11-15-2011, 12:28 PM
The '66 MGB is mine. No, not intimidating, in fact the opposite (except on the staightaways!). Older cars get much more attention. There were a handful of new 458s and they hardly got a second look! There was even a Bugatti Veyron and aside from the curiosity factor, all I heard was that it looked like a nuclear powered cockroach! Maybe I'm just jealous! Nah..................

I have lots of favorites from the almost accessible (for me) Lotus Elans to the ain't ever gonna happen alloy-bodied Ferrari 275 GTB - WOW

It's just amazing how this has grown as a word of mouth, Sunday morning, get a cup of coffee type event. It remains really low key.

I keep thinking about what to do when I sell the TR.......
I keep making lists........ and then changing them:
The first streetable bike I ever owned was a 1950 BMW R-25 that had been brought back from Germany by a GI. I bought it in 1960 for $100.00 just before my 16th birthday. One day I was riding it and saw a 1950 BMW 328 that had been brought back from Germany by a GI.......he was stopped in a parking lot and I started up a conversation w/him. It was an absolutely beautiful car, every bit a s pretty as the one in the pictures above. Of course it was only 10 years old at the time. I've wanted one ever since. If you're not familiar w/them, they had a jewel like 6 cylinder engine w/a high cam, and cross over push rods that made the engine look like it had two over head cams. The three Solex carbs fed the intake ports straight down the miuddle of the head from the top. It made for a pretty tall engine, but it produced over 120 HP from 2L even w/only 7:1 CR. The engine was given to the British auto industry for war reparations and used in a number of post war British cars. Among them was all Bristols, many AC's, Frazer-Nash, and others including the Arnolt Bristol Bolide.
Another would be a '65 Jag E-Type Series 1, Mark II coupe.
How about a pre war MG race car?
A Maserati 3500 GT.
Maybe an early pagoda roofed MB.
I could even learn a bit from Don about Alfa's.

zelatore
11-17-2011, 12:05 PM
I know the TR is turning out nice and all, but if you want a 328 you'd better be ready to bring the coin - those things are crazy money these days!

The Jag coupe would be high on my list of 'one day' cars. But I'm a little scared of them. Seems...complicated.

The Alfa GTVs are still reasonably affordable and can be anything from a driver to a track car to a collectible just depending on what model and how you want do do it. Parts are mostly available, and they're pretty straight forward for doing your own work. Plus, the Alfa twin-cam may be the best sounding small bore motor ever! The Bertone body isn't hard on the eyes either.

I would like an early XKE coupe and I also love the MK 2 sedans. Finding a mint car that was recently restored will probably be the cheapest in the long run. You could by the nice $25k car and put another $25 k in it or buy the nicely restored car for $40k.

Don is correct about 328 pricing!!
I just checked my "Sports Car Market" Pocket Price Guide and the values are between $200K-$300K so my chances of ownership are probably pretty small. But it is an "A" investment grade.
A few years ago, I saw an "EMW" 327 for sale in Hemmings. I called the guy and asked him what exactly it was. He explained the BMW plant in Eisenach ended up in East Germany and their products were labeled "EMW" or "Eisenach Motorren Werke" or something like that.
Anyway, this guy was having trouble selling this car......Another one that got away.

I continue to be impressed with the number of cars you draw for what I assume is just an informal get together. Sort of like what we get at Alice's Restaurant on the weekends for bikes. Nothing formal, but every weekend in the summer the place is standing room only.

(now I'm wishing I lived closer and could hang out there)

Thanks for throwing in the (ahem) Alfa. The S/S cars were somewhat odd - Very cool looking, but technically a dead-end since the had no racing/performance advantage. They do bring more money than the standard 750 or 101 Giulietta or Giulia though. I've never driven one - I understand the aero treatment makes them pretty quite compared to the standard cars. You know...if you're into that sort of thing in your 50 year old small-bore Italian sportscar!

(Mike, I tried to be gentle!)

BTW, speaking of special bodied Alfas are you familier with the Disco Volante? Aero excercises done in the early 50's and worth crazy money now (also credited with inspiring the Jag E-type 10 years later). And for even crazier money, you can get a new version done on the current 8C platform. It is dead-sexy though, and if I was in command of Crazy Money, you can bet I'd be having one built!

Bugeye and Bombers!

No, the two events are not affiliated. But yesterday my son and I took a ride on a B-24 through an organization called the Colling's Foundation. www.CollingsFoundation.org (http://www.CollingsFoundation.org)

Only about 25 minutes of actual flying time, but it was awesome (and LOUD, about 100dBs!).
We were belted in at take-off and landing but could crawl (literally in some places) around the plane nose to tail once airborne.

We took off out of White Plains and headed west to the Tappan Zee. Turned north up the Hudson, turned east at the Bear Mountain Bridge and back to HPN. All at about 1000' w/ great foliage. A great afternoon for any warbirds enthusiast.

I know the body was aluminum, and I think the dash and many interior structure parts were also aluminum. I've made it to a few Caffeine and Carburetors in the past 18 months or so, but I'm guilty of not taking pictures - sue me!

But I made it to the first of the year today and took about 150 photos until my battery ran out. A spectacular day in the north east and everyone w/ a nice car was out. The event has gotten both bigger and smaller. C&C attracts close to 1000 vehicles on a good day and the Town has pushed back a bit as the roads are absolutely jammed (with a lot of nice cars), but it is almost impossible to get around. As a compromise, two events will be held in town each year, down from six, and two more are held just out of downtown at an estate that was donated to the Town many decades ago by the family of actor Christopher Lloyd.

This event has grown, largely by word of mouth, and now social media, from the pattern of taking the nice car out for Sunday coffee. What used to be 10 or 20 or several dozen cars now sees hundred of cars from all around and neighboring states. While 1 or 2 blocks used to contain all the cars, it is now the entire downtown w/ cool cars everywhere, lots of walking! - first world problems........

I'll start out w/ all the license plates, because they crack me up, enjoy -

----These two Maseratis actually don't have a value, in a way. They are so rare that there is no way to rate them other than "a whole lot".......Bill S

Definitely a bit surreal walking around cars like that (and a half dozen others at the show). As Bob Dylan says - Money doesn't talk, it swears!

One of the great aspects of this event is that these cars aren't roped off, but rather right there on the street near all the hustle and bustle. They even get driven in and driven out. It's great to see them, hear them, smell them as cars, not just as works of art. And of course, there is the jumble of the ordinary and the extraordinary side by side. The kid with the Trabant was about 10 cars away and he was having a blast and posing for as many, or more pictures than the unobtanium autos.

In the six years or so I've been attending this show, I think I've seen just about one of everything. It's a great treat to see them out and about, one day they won't be.

Here's a few more ordinary, but still cool cars. :cool!:
Peace!

I had a friend years ago who had two of those 3 wheeled Isettas. I haven't seen one in ages.

I can't say I really "get" Isettas.
Or why a nice one cost 2X what a nice 2002 would be.
They really are a curiosity.
A lowly Beetle would seem to make so much more sense at that time in history.
I wonder if in 50 years Smart Cars will be sought after. Not by me!

A few more Bimmers
