My new to me 1992 Sweet 16. Man o man, am I happy. I'm the 3rd owner and all of the original paperwork and manuals are included. 302 Ford, Cobra drive, 23" SS prop, new risers and heads, new 500 cfm 2 bbl. carb, new radial trailer tires, original full cover with OMC and Donzi logo's on it. All upholstery is there and in very good condition with the exception of a few missing snaps.

What a blast to drive. Great accelleration, rides smooth and steady at higher speed and trimmed up a bit. I believe I ran flat out (old gas) 4200 rpm and a bit over 55 MPH on the speedo-no GPS. I'll probably add tabs to minimize mid-speed porposing. And to minimize my wife screaming at me to slow down!!!

Coupla questions:
>>were the 16's sold with Magic Loader trailers? Does anybody know any issues with them?
>>what year did Donzi start installing ethanol safe tanks?
>>anybody know what replacement carpet will cost? The snaps are there but no carpet.

Spring 2011 can't come soon enough.....

John C

Don't add tabs just yet. A little seat time will tell.

Congrats John, I just got a Donzi too and really wish it was June. We're going to have good weather this weekend so I'll hold off winterizing until Monday. (Canadian Thanksgiving weekend)

just my opinion: the 23" prop is too steep, guess there is still some potential with the right setup/prop and you might gain some speed- 4200 rpm sounds a bit low, but here are other and better experts on board you might get some info from.

Have fun with it

I agree, 4200 is too low, should be 4800-5000. Go down a pitch or two in prop. Or get a new manifold and slap a 600 cfm 4bbl on it.

John, Congrats on the boat. :)

I was wondering how you were making out. I guess the one in GA that we talked about earlier this week didn't work out. I am glad to see something did though.. :)

I offer carpets a few different ways for those with varying prices. You can give me a shout when you get home this week if you want. As you know I am here if you need me.. :) Jamie / Lakeside

I managed 57.9 with my 91 same setup, mine had the 350 cfm 2B. With 500 you should get a tick or too closer to 60 when you get use to it. IMO the 16 is the most weight sensitive bouncy buggers of the bunch and needs tabs the most, the difference is night and day.

Finally home from NC. 9 hours behind the wheel and several pee strops for the wife and the pooch. So I owe y'all a few replies. First of all, thanks for the comments. All are appreciated.

dparis: I agree more seat time may well reveal I don't need tabs but my experience is they do help to minimize the porposing. And thats always been a problem my wife is uncomfortable with. She has always been supportive of every boat I've bought ("If you want it that bad, then buy it") so $100 for Smart Tabs is a small price to pay to make her enjoy the Donzi more.

axelkloehn and Donziweasel: both the specs and the label on the motor say the WOT is 4000-4400 RPM. I was drivng a boat with year old gas of unknown grade (we did get some pinging on and off) on a lake I've never been on and I hadn't even discussed a final selling price so it wasn't my boat. But I do recall there was some throttle left when I was at 4200 rpm. The prop is a Viper 3 blade SS 14.25x23 and it appears to be well chosen. Time will tell. Oh, and the manifold and 4 bbl? I don't think increasing the volume of air/fuel will buy me much if anything without more cam. It was that way when I was a speed shop mechanic many years ago.

John, No problemo. I will be here when you are rested & ready.. :)

As far as tabs for porpoising, they can help and do help a bit. However drive position and seat time as mentioned earlier does help. Beyond that regular tabs can be a nice aid to have and they can help with controlling porpoising a little more if you need, as well as helping to control listing and slight amounts of chine walking if you should experience any. Sometimes playing with props can also help with some handling issues as well. That said there are also just some normal things that one needs to get used to in regards to the classic line and how it will respond and handle.. Also the most common types of tabs used or installed on the majority of the classics are Bennetts. I have put on many sets, however there are also Lenco tabs and some others to choose from as well.. :)

+1 on the Bennett tabs.
The 16 is definitely fickle...my guess is that you will grow to really appreciate them.

Ah ha, I see that you bought the 16 from my friends Matt and Reid at Race City Marine on Lake Norman. I looked at that boat about a year or so ago but just couldn't get the price right ( of course I was dickering for thru hull exhaust and trim tabs to be included ). It is a very nice boat, really clean, and I am sure that you will enjoy it. On the cam, remember that these boat are not cars and what you are looking for is sort of Harley-like, lots of torque at relatively low rpm. I am sure that you will have a ball with this one :nilly:

By the way, did you see the 289 SB that Reid had a NASCAR shop build for one of his 17' CC Mustangs? Bored/stroked to 427, two Holleys, etc. Don't know the HP, but someone is going to be surprised when they pick on that 30 year old Correct Craft

Matt is also into Jersey Skiffs, sells them and runs one. This link is of one that they sold at RCM http://vimeo.com/15688541

Bennetts for sure.....and the proper prop I have found is one of the keys to a really good experience.....I tried a labbed 23p on my 22C that got my rpms up from where they are with my Mirage 27P BUT the boat was not nearly as stable feeling at speed, so I went back to the 27P which tops out at around 4800 rpms. Gonna try a labbed M+ 25P next that I just got off of eBay.....there are some experts on props on this site, but every boat/motor combo seems to be a little different, so trial and seat time seems to work the best for dialing in.

Anyone else with a 16', how long is the pole on your anchor light? Mine is 36". don't feel bad, mine was so long that when laid across the back seat of my Cherokee one door wouldn't close..

That's a fine looking 16 John. I just got mine today. a red 1990 w/ 4.3 L. I'd prefer a V8, but I hit 52 mph no problem on the test run no problem before backing down due to choppy water (yeah, well it wasn't mine yet). I'd like a through tramsom exhaust system too. I look forward to learning from your modifications.

Congrats on your sweet 16 nice looking boat!!

This season (My first season with this boat)
My 16 Classic ran;
54 mph@5100 rpm with a 19 pitch SS prop and
53 mph @4300 rpm with a 23 pitch SS
I have a 5.7 L 350 Merc I am a little disapointed in the speed.
I plan to add some Hp and would like to see 70mph
Other then that..... Its a great ride.

seems like you have a lot of prop spin, most of us run high 50s to low 60s with the 350sbc/23 combo. Even my GT21 runs over 60 with a Mirage 23 and the standard 350sbc/Bravo1. Did you trim it right? The last 8mph I just gain with right trimming!

Yes I am trimmed out perfectly. Thats why I am disappointed in my top end but my 350 only has a 2 barrel carb and I think it might be a 2 bolt main pushing only around 260 HP. I plan on diagnosing the situation this winter to decide what I want to do for the upgrades. I am Also looking for suggestions and interest in my motor as I hope to sell it when I decide what I am going to do.

John- you picked up a gorgeous 16- beautiful boat.

the prop you have is for a workboat, the blade area is horrendous.... that explains the 800 rpm drop for only a 4" pitch change,,, get a 21 Mirage Plus or a 21 Turbo 1 and retest... :boat: it should run 57-58 minimum @ 4700.... a V6 220 will run 55 all day long @ 4700/4800

John it is a great looking boat and I wish you good luck and lots of enjoyment with. It is almost identical to my new Donzi Classic 22, color is the same except I do not have the white stripe at the water line. Mine has a 454 Magnum with a Bravo 1 drive on a Loadmaster Aluminum Trailer. Spring cannot come soon enough!

Enjoy the boat John.

I think that you will find consensus that there isn't a lot of difference in gps speed between a stock V-6 and a stock V-8 "16", just with the V-8 you get to use more gas and make it "rumble" Think between 55 and 60 is where they play unless you get into some mods. BUT in that size boat it is PLENTY fast :nilly:
