Thanks Ken,
yes I can get IN and lay on either side for any maintenance...although looking at the pics you would never think it would be possible. Its really
no problem. I was very surprised after I installed the engine.

I am guessing you are in Covington Washington? Nice hanger and airplane.
I am in Gig Harbor. Not a lot of Donzis in our neck of the woods but my first ride was my girlfriend's baby 16...Mercury outboard. She kept it in Cozy Cove on Lake Washington at her aunt's (my mom's best friend) house. Not all that fast but loads of fun. I am now in the process of getting my engine ready for re-installation after #1 son had trailer issues and totaled boat. Long story but Dealer I bought boat from (for display at Seattle Boat show in 1996) borrowed my 1995 18C, then instead of returning to my home took it up to dealership in Kirkland and left it outside during cold hard freeze. Cracked both exhaust manifolds, which they replaced with cheap aftermarket Aqua Power manifolds, and unbeknownst to me also cracked block. That crack was undiscovered until this past summer when engine came out of boat to replace transom assbly and outdrive with a Bravo. Engine built by Chuck DeBois in Totem Lake at C&D Engine Performance.........383 Stroker plus other goodies. Engine goes into paint shop later this month, then pics to post.

Very good looking. A cool idea. I absolutely admit I don't know but I do wonder how the bottom end of these will hold up compared, say, to Stainless Marine. If you read all the Stainless Marine pages, it sounds like they started out building manifolds purely from stainless steel, and ultimately moved to the aluminum manifold/stainless-steel riser setup they have today, as they were unhappy with how stainless steel manifolds performed under the heat. If I read it right. I have ZERO direct experience here, just remarking on what I read. The hi-teks are all stainless steel I *think*. Even IF all this is true, doens't mean they might not be WAY better than cast iron. Also, I wonder if the hi-teks' geometry might not have more water and keep most of the metal cooler, but I am now speculating even more than I was before. Just thinking out loud. Enough hijack, back to everyone's engine pics...

This engine I know a little more about than the GT-21 motor. I had put some of these engines on a previous engine post, but will put them back up for this thread. They were all eye candy to me,so I hope you enjoy them. This engine was custom built for one of the very few 1988 Testa Rossa 22 foot classics. The 1st 454 motor that came with the boat in 1988, was removed and rebuilt by John Lingenfelter. It had upper 500's in HP plus a very high HP Nitrous Oxide kit hooked to it. This was done basically when the boat was rather new. The nitrous bottle was never filled, thank God, but when this unbeaten 22 was finally bested by a new fangled Foutain, the motor was removed & a new GM Big block sent to Lingenfelter's shop & what was delivered back was a 682 Dynoed HP high torgue monster. Just for giggles, the nitrous system is still hooked up in case there is ever anyone that would like to see what a 1000 hp feels like in a 22 foot Donzi. The amazing thing about this wonderful Donzi is that it is basically stock except for the engine & bullet bravo drive. Oh yea, also the robot hood scoop is not quite stock. ha ha

donzi racer
01-15-2011, 01:31 PM
Here is a little small block Ford 302 that sounded like a big block monster. It was built for a 1968 Barrel Back & seemed to have gobs of HP but could not keep the boat in the water. Next, I will put some pics of a small block 408 in a 1966 Barrel Back that was the opposite as far as handling. Like it was on rails up to mid 70's. Both boats had merc bravo drives. Tom

donzi racer
01-15-2011, 03:45 PM
Blown Crew Cab created this 1966 Barrel Back from a discarded bare hull & cap. The motor as described to me is 400 chevy bored to a 408 with lots of Special Goodies. When he was descibing it to me, my eyes kinda glazed over & all I heard was a word every now & again. But it may have something titanium, aluminum, or stainless steel, maybe something was decked, or was it some pop ups, seems like something was double pumping, anyway lots of stuff that sounded FAST, REAL FAST! It has the Loudest Dang Motor I ever heard! Mike said to me that he was about to fire it up so watch out it is loud! I just laughed, I kindly told him that I had been around Donzi's for over 40 years & knew about the noise. He let that beast come to life & I got dizzy from the vibration, jumped straight back 3 feet! Noise must be GOOD though, because it seemed to help the boat go REAL FAST, just this side of 80 mph. The name of the boat you may ask? Should be "LOUD DAMN BOAT", but of course it is QUIET PLEASE! God help anyone that is in the boat when you go between bridge walls. Sounds like someone is bombing you. Tom

I already posted on my little motor when I started the thread, but thought everyone would enjoy the history of it, after I have learned a little more talking with my dad. It's not one of the big impressive high horsepower motors some of you guys have posted, but this little engine has some cool background...

My dad (we lived in SoCal at the time in 1966) purchased the 289 HIPO block new from Detroit and had it shipped out to Dave Zueschel (Hot Rod Hall of Fame Engine Builder). Dave and my dad spec'd out the engine, they had the block decked and the cylinders cross-hatched?, all balanced and matched components (crank, flywheel, etc). The crank was even modified, balanced, cross-drilled, chamfered, etc. Then they had Ed Iskendarien Cams build a mild cam for it and Edlebrock supply one of their new manifolds. Dad took the heads down to Joe Mondello to have them modified, ported, polished, etc. They wanted a strong dependable motor with some higher performance but nothing extreme. That huge oil pan is cast aluminum.

Fast forward 45 years of storage and stories and we are bringing a low use old engine back to life. We replaced an oil pump and a carburator and added an electronic distrubutor to replace the dual points. The first thing I heard from Scotty when we got it started again was "That thing sounds like no engine I have ever heard"

So this engine has really been touched by some legends of the Hot Rod business. Scott himself even worked with and knew Dave Zueschel, so it is a small world. I have contacted Edlebrock and Mondello to let them know about this time capsule and it has been fun. We are going to pull it out again this spring and have some more engine work done and keep it true to the original build. Should be purring like a bad-ass little kitten by boat season...

Pipnit - it dyno'd right @ 600 HP and 586 ft. Lbs.

Carl - Thanks, I developed an oil leak due to a timing cover bolt and pucked a bunch of oil in the bilge, but other than that yes it ran pretty good. Still need to work with props or a possible re-gear in the upper to get e everything out of it.

Steve,,, is that 6.2L injected? like to see big HP from a small block,,, the blower looks cool
Yes it's an EFI Whipple Supercharger, we took the block over .030 changed pistons to a forged deeper dish than stock dropping compression to around 8.8:1, changed to aluminum heads with bigger 2.02, 1.60 valves with 1.6 full roller rockers and a slightly larger than stock cam, and added a 7 qt. Oil pan and a medium size oil cooler, the Whipple is the kit for a stock 6.2 but we added 2 additional injectors account of the other mods. Bolting the "Whipple kit for the 6.2" on a factory engine would net you somewhere in the 470-485 ish HP, mine had 362 hrs on it and I wasn't a big fan of boosting the factory engine with non forged pistons, so we figured if we are going that far into it we'd change the other stuff also and get a lil added insurance against detonation with the aluminum heads. Well, supposedly my little 289 will peak out around 5800 rpm in the water. I don't know if that's just the performance parts or a bad tach but that's what I was told. It also supposedly did 6100 rpm before the prop change.

I guess the near 350 hours I got on my motor (and drive) before I rebuilt it was just luck because I would run it contantly at 5,800 rpm. Then again, I have one of those old, heavy, junky TRS drives.

I know I already posted pics of the motor, but I finally have a little video of our boat at idle to hear the little 289 (link below). I don't know why, but it just makes me feel good to hear it run, so I keep replaying the video clip. My wife was getting some stuff out of the car up in the trailer parking area when I started it up and she said she thought it was a big race boat and then saw me and said out loud "oh...that is OUR boat" LOL

1966 Ford 289 HIPO with heads done by Mondello and an Isky cam (engine originally balanced and blueprinted by Dave Z in southern California). Scotty at Cabo Marine has brought it back to running great.
