I know that this is mostly a performance site, but I have a buddy with a 1987 Four Winns with a Mercury 224 cubic in motor.

This particular engine has a proprietary altenator an regulator and as fate would have it, the voltage regulator died.

Mercury wants big wood for this liquid cooled regulator, close to $500.00.

I was wondering if anyone on the board has had this particular problem and their fix.

Can a different regulator be wired in place of this stock one?

I betcha good local rebuilder could fix it for a fraction.

Ken,

Have your friend call this place. They make alternator conversion kits for that engine. Not cheap, but I think a good deal less than the $500 you speak of. There's also an active forum there with more information:
