I took the original fuel pump and filter combo off my 1970 351 H/M and cleaned it out....it had been sitting for 10 years....pump diaphragm looked good....

I reinstalled it and can't get it to prime. I took it off again and again to see if I had the arm positioned correctly?.....it mounts with some tension.

With the pump in my hand I can get it to squirt fuel by moving the arm. I used a hand pump to get some fuel moving....

Anyway....after much cranking....still nothing. Can these pumps be a "bear" to prime?....

Thanks!

Usually they pick up fuel pretty quick. Is the cam turning ?

Or use a vacuum gauge on the inlet side and a pressure gauge on the outlet.

It sounds like it has compression...sounds normal. Maybe I'll pull the pump and make sure the fuel pump cam is turning...?

Anyone know of a rebuild kit for this original style pump?

Go electric, it's so easy to do.
Go with a Holley compatible w/ethanol and a Holley safety switch.

Sometimes if I let mine sit for a while, I have to give the old girl some help... a squirt of gas in the carb and fire it up. That primes everything and I'm good for the season.

Fo a rebuild kit, look for the grayhaired guy at your local auto parts store. Flop it up on the counter... he'll know the kit...
