we have discussed this before
is there a safe alternative to the merc drive lube
or is there somewhere you can buy it in bulk?

Shea, any automotive 80w90 HYPOID (or GL-5) gear oil will work just fine.
If you want to go upscale, a full synthetic 75w-90 GL-5 or 75w-140 GL-5 is what you should be looking for.
What brand? Mobil1 is probably available at Canadian Tire.
If you want to spend $$$ ask Donnelly where he purchased his Harley's 6-speed tranny oil, that would work too.
What ever you use, make sure it is a GL-5/Hypoid (both terms mean the same) product.
Ken
I used Mobil 1 gear lube in all my drives. I think it is 75/90 wt;
