I came across an ad for a 2001 Donzi Classic 16 that claimed to have a 4 cylinder engine.

There were no pictures of the boat. I suspect it isn't a Donzi Sweet 16, but it got me wondering if Donzi ever offered a 4 cylinder engine as an option in the "Classic" 16 (Ski-Sporter to current)?

Yes they did the original prototypes were 4 cyl volvos , they did make some production 4 cyl volvo as well , they even made a skisporter or 2 with 6 cyl

one of those would be the coral colored one Don made for his secretary

once the sweet 16 came about the 6 cyl (4.3) was more the standard than the 8 cyl

also seem to recall a yanmar diesel powered 16 that was a tender too

I found one here for sale last year with a Deisel. It was pretty cool and like new. The guy wanted $12K for it. It didn't sell and he took it back hime. I suspect he still has it in his garage.

I've seen a Yanmar 16, they're cool as hell, I'd love one.

Matty, I thought they might have had some 4 cylinders back in the day, based on what engines were available at the time, and what outdrives could handle.

A diesel 16 could be a very interesting project.

Last Tango can elaborate more, but there is a diesel 16 that participates in the Jax Poker Runs every year.. in fact, he was there a month or so ago..
