I have a 1989 22 with the 460 king cobra over then weekend I had the engine lock up and would not start got towed back and checked the oil and it was like a milk shake. I have a couple questions first would be has anyone recently replaced a motor and what did they choose. im looking for any info and steps I should take next. Thank you in advance this is my first time posting so bare with me I love the site and have learned so much over the years by juat reading others post. this happened at the worst part of the season but im hoping I can be back on the water asap.

My first guess is that your least expensive path would be to replace it w/another 460.
I've always heard they are good engines.

if it's OMC manifolds/risers they would be highly suspect and very hard to get new ones.... you can get Stainless Marine manifolds for a 454 Chevy and adapter plates however..

pull spark plugs and turn engine over by hand and see if theirs water in the cylinders..the engine may be salvageable if you get the water out.also do what buiz suggested, look at the manifolds for water ingestion..

The motor isn't wrecked just because it has water in the oil "However" the watery oil needs to be removed ASAP, if it has time to separate then depending on how much water is in there it can Rust the crank & cyl walls etc. Once you find the culprit and fix it you can run the motor a few times and change the oil to Douche out all the water. salt water is much worse than fresh but if you act fast then you'll be boating again in a week (end) or two.

Hey guys thank you for the responses I did take the plugs out and tried to turn it over and it wouldnt budge. I put a 1/2 breaker bar on it and nothing. Does this mean anything?

If you have the spark plugs out & it still doesn't move check your crank case oil level to see if it is too high & check the starter to see if it is locked up in the fly wheel. If they are both fine you may have a seized engine which could get costly..

One other thing to do is if you haven't taken the drive off yet, do it. Then if the engine is still locked you know what you've got. Otherwise you may have a locked drive that makes it look as if you have a locked engine.. ;)

I took the drive off yesterday everything was ok with the drive.

Well then yes, you should probably start looking further into the engine... ;) I just would have hated to see someone make a potentially very expensive misdiagnosis.. ;) Jamie / Lakeside

My first boat had a seized up 225 Buick V-6. I pull the spark plugs and filled the cylinders with everything imaginable. I'd go out each morning and hit it a couple times with the starter. When I filled the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil, the next morning I hit the starter and oil flew everywhere.:)

The engine was still running when I traded in for my fishboat.
