I ran across a '78 Glastron GT-150 for sale, with a '79 Merc 115 on it. It's the same boat that did all those wild scenes in the James Bond movie, Live and Let Die, including the shot where they jumped a road (a record at the time), and another shot where a boat went right into the side of a semi trailer. The literature suggests a 50-90hp range, but the boats jumping in the movie had 135 Evinrudes.

I didn't get a close look, but I'll be going back to it again. The guy had $1800 on his sign but with me still in the truck he came down to $1300. The hull had all original badging, and was a faded yellow and white. He mentions that the lift mechanism on the outboard needs new o-rings, but made it sound like a pretty easy job.

I grew up skiing behind a GT-130 with a 65 Merc. We beat the crap out of that boat, and it is still a rock solid package and still in use. I'm thinking this would be a cool boat for my son, but my wife is calling us both crazy!

Any thoughts?

(This pic is not the boat for sale, but is the same year...)

OK - let me be perfectly clear.....Cherrie is NOT crazy!

But - $1300.......isn't that about what you saved him on rent? I think HE should buy it for YOU! :cool!:

I used to own one and have two fifty year old friends that traded in their inflatables for GT 160 Carlsons. I was on it yesterday and it is a 50 mph boat with a 115 Merc. Both friends paid under 4k for very nice boats. A mint 20 ft. Carlson with a Berkeley jet and Ford 460 power sold on E bay for $9200(1977). Lots of fun and well built.

A friend had one a couple years ago. Fun little boat for sure!

Check the floor, stringers and transom carefully...

Great little boat. If they haven't been redone, the floor and stringers will most definitely need to be replaced, unless the boat was never left uncovered. They didn't use marine plywood in the floors, and the stringers were not sealed.

My nephew owns a 1979 CVX-16, which is the next generation GT-160, and the stringers were about 25% rotted away, and what was left could barely be called wood. He paid $1,800 for it, as shown in the first picture. 53 mph worth of calm water fun!

Fortunately it is a much easier job than doing the same in a Donzi, as he did his without removing the deck.

Wait for Walt H to chime in. He has a spectacular 18' Glastron I/O named Shadow Girl. He knows Glastrons.
