Oddly enough, even though it comes in with less power than either the Camero or Challenger, the Mustang keeps whoopin' both of them in road tests.

And that was before the new 5.0 for '11.

Granted, I speak only from 2nd hand knowledge; I haven't driven any of them.

(and do keep in mind that I've owned a few Mustangs in the past, so I could maybe, sorta, be biased)

Does the Camaro have an independent rear suspension as that is a major limitation of the Mustang?

How does not having irs limit the current crop of hipo Mustangs?

First, I like the look of the Mustang the best of the 3 retro muscle cars. I like the Camaro the least but that is simply personal preference as to looks and what I like. The Mustang's suspension is a major limitation to handling if the car isn't going in a straight line. You can see this in the TV show Top Gear that did a feature on the Mustang with the big power option. I'm sure it's on You Tube. The car was very marginal on the track. It was great in a straight line. They did a follow up with the Roush Mustang with less power but revised rear suspension and the car was then quite respectable on the track. Non independent rear suspension is akin to drum brakes in my humble opinion.

Camaro has IRS...seeing as it was designed by Holden.

a major limitation to handling

I wouldn't quite call a straight axle a "major" limitation. Both types have to be adjusted to maximize their potential. Straight axles are generally stronger, and may weigh less than an IRS setup.

My straight axle race car beat many IRS cars, but I was driving so I'm probably biased. :D

Aside from my obvious bias as a Ford guy, I prefer the Mustang just because it's smaller than either the Camero or Challenger. Both of them just seem to BIG and heavy. That size and weight is a big part of why the press still seems to prefer the Mustang even though it wasn't stronger in a straight line. I suppose with the new motor that gap will be closed.

And as a guy who prefers road racing to drag racing I understand the limitations of that live axle, but I think if you took one to a track you might find the limit isn't so low as you'd think. I've been 'round Thunderhill in an 'old school' live axle Mustang and it's not such a bad thing. And from my reading, the current generation does an awful good job with that 'old' tech. So tossing the Mustang under the buss for having a live axle is sort of like tossing a 'vette (or Camero) under the buss for having pushrods...

As for Buiz's comment, I have to agree. It just looks like they tried too hard.

Of course I like the Elise/Exige, so my taste is open to debate.

I stand corrected. The current rear suspension on the new Mustang is a major limitation, not simply because it isn't independent.
