I have the Sweet 16 bug. I am a classic outboard guy and thought initially that is the way I want to go but it seems the vast majority of 16's out there are I/O's. After hours of googling etc. I can't seem to find a history of the Sweet 16. I know it was introduced in 64 but beyond that it seems there is very little available as far as engine options through the years as well as what other options were/are available through Donzi dealers or third parties. Yes, I am a newbie but I have always admired the Sweet 16 and thinking I am not getting any younger so what the hell, why not!

Thanks in advance for any info you would like to respond with.

There have been several 16s for sale lately with outboards... might be worth poking around the For Sale section a little bit. Also, several have shown up on eBay and Craigslist. Welcome and good luck! :wink:

Sctiberio, what might you be sellling and how close are you to the west coast, i.e. Los Angeles.

Cutwater, interestingly enough I have found more outboards for sale than I/O's. I am a classic outboard guy from way back and my first instinct was to start looking for O B versions but I am at the point where I could go either way.

One question I have for anyone out there is it seems that the sweet 16 hull is somewhere between 1,500 and 1,600 lbs. (is this correct?) If you place a 350 - 400 lb outboard on it, it brings the weight up to about 2,000 lbs. It seems that the I/O versions come in at around 2,300 - 2,500 lbs. My question is not so much about the difference in weight / performance between the two (assuming roughly the same horsepower) but rather balance. Does it stand to reason that the I/O with the engine in the boat versus an outboard, will essentially be a much better balanced boat or when your throttle is wide open or fairly close to wide open it doesn't make any difference. I suppose a related question has to do with my other thread about the need for trim tabs. I would assume it is preferable regardless of the power source, yes?

I'm guessing that the power options are not the same as you stated I/o's are going to ahve a lot more hp's than the o/b you would put on the boat Greg G and highlife probably has all the info you need Good luck

I have done both I/O and OB. the minimal difference in the balance doesn't show until you REALLY Launch off a Wave. in this case the OB flies better, but both land Transom first. The big diff is that the motor tourque can/will make an I/O land on it's side unless you throttle back perfectly. The instances I'm refering too are not what the average guy would do with the family in the boat. it's 4 dudes that Really like to fly:). So which ever version you choose will suit you if thats really what you wanted. Get which ever is a better deal for you, they are both fun as _ _ _ _.....:)

I would have thought that the I/O's have higher horsepower options than the Outboards but if we are talking stock engines, from what I can tell the 190 horse I/O seems to be a popular powerplant, yet I have come across several OB versions sporting 200 horse Mercs and above.

As far as flying goes and knowing when to throttle back when coming back to earth, I might leave that to others for now.

1987 Challenger Scorpion 21 for sale in Canada, a few hundred miles north of Seattle. If You want one of the best riding small V-hulls ever created, classic look with an outboard, look no further. It even has a newer engine. If boat and engine checks out, this is then a fantastic buy in my opinion.

That 21 challenger IS the perfect all around V Bottom. It's the boat other boats are compared too. If you don't have to have a Donzi, That Challenger is the Best you can Do, it does everything Perfect.

Sorry TDockside and thanks Jim :wink:
I jumped to conclusions and took the address listed in the original ad I found. It showed however that the address was actually for the ad listing company and not for the broker/company actually selling the boat. Now this little beauty is a continent away and that is unfortunately almost allways the case when it comes to these type of capable little deep vees :(
I guess the race is on for Detroit and Buffalo boaters now that could just zip across the border and grab it. The US Northeast is full of fantastic outboard deep vees,(Superboats, Instigators, Progressives etc.), but down here in the South West they are far in between. I missed out on a Howard 23 Offshore outboard several years ago(sold in WA and is now in NY, see 1st photo) and eventually settled for a Schiada 20SS(photo 2) and a Stoker 20.4 SST(photo 3). None of my boats are even close to being as smooth riding as a Challenger, but are good enough for most lakes and rivers and fun in their own ways. Let me know which waterways You plan to enjoy TDockside and I can probably point out a few good alternatives/objects here in CA/AZ/NV. I tend to follow the market almost continously.

For You lucky fellows close to the Challenger here's the GPS link;
