I just bought a 1972 Cobalt GT 500, It has a Holman Moody 289, I dont know too much about it... obviously its a copy of a corsican...I pretty much got the boat for nothing because it needs some minor motor work. I dont know anything about these, and I cant find anything online about them...can anyone help shed some light...thanks, heres some pics.

Welcome to the board.

Fantastic find.

Pretty rare, too.

Where in Michigan are you? I would love to see this in person.

I'm going to kill myself now.

Tony?

Do you know this boat?

I believe this is your neck of the nape.

Sorry Chevy.

Yup, that has to be Barry H.'s old boat. Hard to tell in the pic, but it is an orange-ish color, and very cool. It's always been barn stored, hasn't been run in quite a while, but when it was running it ran very well.

I would take the engine out and give it to Felice's Engine Shop between Portland and Ionia. They are Ford experts and will tell you what you need to do to get the old 302 back in shape.

Great buy, although I am miffed at Barry because I told him years ago to let me know if he ever wanted to sell it. Hard to be real pissed, though, because he was my dentist before he retired!

Rog500, I've been in Portland for 33 years...I probably know you!

There is a Cobalt expert named Craig Zimmerman, but he is not a real frequent visitor to this board. I even think he has a website regarding the history of Cobalts. Maybe some searching will find him, I know that we have discussed these before. They are a well-built copy of Donzis, with quality construction and near exact dimensional and hardware replication.

Look at this...

Awesome GT-500. I have a Cobalt XV-200 (the Sweet 16 Donzi copy). Hey Tony! Thanks for calling me an "expert!" :)

So here is the story on the 72 Cobalt GT 500.

Originally this boat belonged to Roger Willard, my uncle.
Roger sold it to Barry Hilligan, my uncle.
Barry new my love of the boat and my uncle Roger. When Roger passed away, Barry decided to pass the boat on to me, Jeff Hilligan.
I am completely rebuilding the Holmes and Moody 289 engine and completely rebuilding the outdrive.
The boat is having an intense spa year with the white and orange paint and pin striping! Going to update gages, steering wheel and seats. Can't wait to get her in round lake in Charlevoix and have her oodled!
