Not counting the structure mods, what are the thoughts of an 88 Z33powered by an all alumn. 800hp BBC based design w/ Bravo XR?
HP and torque certainly won't be lacking.........

to much weight................

Waste. it will be a gas snorter and a drive braker. You'd need a 6 or arnoson and 1K hp to be mid 80s its a lot of boat for 1 motor and drive

Even if hp and torque is greater than orig 454/330hp twins?

Yup even if its more than the twins. DOnt waste your time or money. But if you are hard set on it. Go for it keep us posted would be a cool build but reliabilty of a Pinto

You can do it and have more reliability than a "Pinto" if you do it right. You would want 1,000 hp, IMCO SCX/SC combo and something to get the CG right.

I would not do it and I really enjoy wasting twins with my single. It would be heavy and you would probably have bow lift problems.

Somewhere in the 28-30 ft range is the limit of singles and that is with a step hull that can run flat.

how about single engine, two drives????

A good friend of mine (i.e. in my wedding) rigged the first one of these up...

Seems like a lot of power loss from the transmission and drive boxes. As for the pinto thing id say same amout of reliability way to heavy its a drive brealer all day and a lot of strain on the engine.

Did you read the article? I know it is just a magazine article but it at least is worth researching more when it says this:

The gears are designed so there is no real horsepower loss between the engine and the transmissions.

Dusky has a 33, twin Bravos, single 440 Yanmar. Even with the diesel it runs over 40 MPH. http://www.dusky.com/boats/dus33d.html

I'm not saying this is the way to go but I do think it could be a viable option for repowers that won't blow the budget.

Repower and budget are a contradiction in terms.

It would work. Not cheap but would work.

IMCO makes a splitter like that as well. Tex looked into them. They work well but are LOUD (at least IMCO's).

As far as the Pinto comment. I still disagree and can back it up. You could take the engine out of my ZX, drop it in paired up to a SCX upper / SC lower combo and it will live. Heck, I push around 7,000 lbs through a beefed up XR with big power and have friends with big blown 1,000's on 38's and their stuff lives.

Overall, a couple of drop in big blocks mated to Bravo's is still the answer though. Building a big single does not come cheap.

How about 5 Merc 300 outboards!!!!

I guess the Midnight Express already has 5 outboards, so you better make it 6.

Now THATS reliability!

With the geared up system there is a weight savings of about 800 pounds.

My thought is you don't really need 800HP...

How about a hopped up HP500 carbed engine? Right off the bat you are light by 800 pounds... The HP carb engines are really reasonable to purchase.

Don't get me wrong here, I personally would do twins. I like twins though, others single so it is fun to think about.

Also... I did a google search and there are a couple of re-powered Z33's out there with interesting choices. One has a pair of 4.3's :shocking:

a couple have small blocks. Would love to hear how the 4.3's and SBC boats run.

Amen brother!

Yep, I am happy with it on the ZX. Mine is nice and reliable. It is easy to get in and wrench on, but I had to drop some coin to get there. It delivered exactly what I wanted. A screamer with one heck of a sound.

The cons's - time between overhaul is around 300 hours or so pending on how much time you spend in boost. Run harder and you should do it earlier. Drives? so there is only one to service right? Well you have to change the oil twice as much. You also have to overhaul the drives every 3 seasons or so.

If you are talking a 550-600 hp single vs two 325 hp twins, well the single will be cheaper to operate. If you up the ante much from there, singles will catch up and cost more quickly. Start pushing 1,000hp and the single will be pretty expensive.

4.3's. That is pretty crazy. Did they use BIII's too?

Some pretty fun thoughts there. If you doubled the price of fuel, the Yanmar with the splitter idea would work. I hope that does not happen.

I don't know... let me find the link and post it. I about fell off my chair when I saw the power package.

I can't see how using a splitter would be cheaper or faster. You'd never be able to sell that boat.

No, I could not see the splitter working until you get into massive power or heavy torque. The ski racers use them for 1,200 + application single's. You can counter rotate the props for better handling and the CG is probably easier to figure out than a #6.

It might be good for repowering a lighter fishing boat.

I do think that it is fun idea to ponder.

I think a splitter that goes the other way is the best idea. Two 500ish hp BBC into one big drive. That would be something to see.

How about a couple of 1,200's reverse split into one big Arneson with counter rotating props? Max power and min drag.

I think if you have lots of money that you don't know what to do with, do one of these options. But if you dont, I'd just put 2 big blocks in it and enjoy it. JMO

I replaced both engines with 420 HP 454's for less than $8000.00 including core charge and freight with a 7 year warranty . (both blocks were cracked beyond repair so I had to pay $1000.00 core. They did give me $1000.00 for the 4 heads.)

http://www.usengine.us/marine.html

I did have a slight issue in the first 10 Hours. One of the exhaust rocker studs worked loose at AOTH. I fixed it with the help of a few people in about 2 hours. On Monday, I called them and didn't let them know it was fixed all ready and they said "let us find a shop near you and we will call you back". I told them I fixed it and they wanted to know how much they owed me to Fix it. I was happy with their response.

Perfect...but those engines would be tough to hold together. The beauty is you could combined two mild engines to get lots of power to one drive. Like two 600hp 540s. Very reliable and 1200hp.
