Wonder if this was really possible!

As a 30 year employee of the oil industry, this scenario is highly flawed. I'm no BO fan but this borders on the absurd.

The fire was consistent with a release of gas under pressure. It started slow but as gas comes up the drill pipe from below, it expands due to the reduced pressure and the bubble accelerates towards to surface. The "mud loggers" on the rig read the gas levels and the weight of the drill mud constantly and anytime the mud weight is lowered (due to gas diluting it in the wellbore) they add more weighting agent.

The drillers don't screw around, they will pump weighting agents if there is any sign of the well flowing and ask questions later. Typical mudweight in this environment is 18 lbs/gallon vs 8 lbs for a gallon of water. The mud pumps (3000hp) can add more well control pressure as necessary.

If the rig was torpedoed, it would have sunk instantly. The rig burned long enough to melt the aluminum helideck. From what I've read and heard, probably a fast "kick" of pressure and people weren't paying enough attention. They will have all sorts of records on the BOP tests which are carried out all the time. A mechanical screw up is always possible. Anyone who owns a boat knows that.
