Ok here is the deal I have pulled apart tons of shifters over the years never had an issue, well this shifter is an odd ball Merc 3000. The neutral safety trigger under the handle is shot so you can just push it into gear while running I fooled with it twice now. First on my own and then with advice from one of the local Merc dealers. The regular 3000 you pull the gear release button out and with a deep socket remove the nut that holds the handle on, Ok sounds easy well I broke the top iff the button only to find NO hex nut in the recess. A dab of Crazy Glue and it is back in its original state! I dug up the schematic off the net and even with that and another talk with my merc guy still cannot find the handle release. Picture and link to the schematic below, would like to get this done so I am comfortable with my customer using the boat.

My guess would be to pop off the top cover, 12, and then remove the retainer, 26. Then I would think the whole handle could be removed.

just a thought phil, the handle looks like it has a 2 piece cover do you have to take the cover off then expose the raw handle and it's release

In reverse order! Matty pulled the screw and had the back side of the handle loose but the button stopped me from getting it apart enough to get the locking bar out. Bob I SEE SAID THE BLIND MAN! When you have take so many of these apart and even the deal says it has a center nut, or as I thought an Allen at the very bottom you get blind to the obvious! Thank you sir! I owe you one! Phil

Matty the Morse is the best shifter ever built none can compare, they were so good that even the King of all marine manufacturers Volvo used them exclusively early on. Phil
