Really isn't much difference IMO to the outboard except draining the lube that is shared between the upper and lower gearcase. Water pump is pretty much the same.

Get a manual, even a cheap one like Clymer and it'll take you step by step.

Before I change mine, I youtube Merc impeller replacement. It makes life a whole lot easier to watch someone do it before I do. The video I watch is of a guy changing a merc outboard impeller, but it looks to be the same process.

Try it, you'll like it! Its easy.

Once you get it apart it's pretty much self explanatory. You won't need a manual, I find them more confusing than useful, but I've been working on stuff since I was five. I'm 54 now. My dad was the best teacher anyone could ever hope for. He showed a lot of compassion when we were working on an alternator for a 1959 Chevy truck. The alternator pivoted, damn near took my finger off and dad told me, "don't bleed on the machinery!" :)

And!! Make sure to install the impeller properly. Look at the old one. The edges of the impeller are pushed backwards a certain way ( te way it rotates ). The impeller is larger than the hole that it sits in. Be sure to look at the way the old one was installed. And use some WD40 or light oil on the impeller when installing it. One last thing, make sure that the shift bracket in the lower unit is aligned. I put mine in foreward gear before I disassemble the unit.
