I'm about to place an order for a gas tank for the TR. I've purchased a couple of tanks from RDS and was very satisfied w/the experience.
I called the other day and asked for a drawing to be emailed to me. I received two. One is for older, pre-AMH boats and is 22" wide.
The other is for boats built in '94 and later and is 23.5".
I was shocked at one of the prices. For the newer boats, the price is $600.00...about what I expected. The tank for the older boats is $850.00.
I don't get it! The sizes are very similar and the volume is the same for both.

BTW, I can get the same tank from Florida Marine Tanks for $550.00.
Here're the RDS drawings;

One of my co workers parents owns RDS. I asked about the price increases a while back and he said Aluminum prices went through the roof.

I'll ask about a Donzi.net discount, see if he can work something out.

I looked at the tank specs. The main difference I see in the New Vs. Old is the Old gets a Zinc Chromate coating. The New only gets Primer.

I was all set to order a new tank for the X-18 from RDS. I'll be sure to check with FMT before I finalize my order.

I'd be glad to take it w/o any coating, since I use my own concoction.
But they wouldn't talk about it. They said I should buy the FMT tank.
Bummer!
FMT is now in NC and not Miami, while RDS is in Perry, about 90 minutes away.

Not enough.
The Cotton Farmer had one shipped to Chicago for $150.00.

I bought an original size one from RDS. I don't remember what they charged. I had a lot of work done at once here in Deland at the Boat Hospital. They had another 22 they were putting new tank in also.

Both tanks (RDS & FMT) are .125 thick and I think both are about 4 weeks.

Here's a copy of the emails from FMT.
There's some interesting information in their "RULES" below;

A fuel tank with the provided specifications would be 53 gallons. The tank will be manufactured from .125 aluminum at a cost of $557.00 each.

· Tank is manufactured out of 5052-H32 Aluminum Alloy.
· Terms are payment in full to issue drawings and initiate manufacture.
· Lead-time: approximately 4 weeks after we receive full payment and drawing approval
· Tanks are quoted FOB Henderson, NC.
· Shipping is not included nor estimated by FMT. Tanks are shipped freight collect.
· This quote is based exclusively on the information contained on drawings. Revisions and/or variations from this information may invalidate this quote.
· Tanks are quoted with pickup (NPTF fitting welded), fill, vent, and electric sending unit.
· We no longer stock or purchase Wema or Rochester Twin-Site senders (visual gauges).
· To ensure the structural integrity and safety of our product, F.M.T. requires mounting information (via drawing, video, and/or written explanation). F.M.T. engineering will assist in advising acceptable mounting modes should you require it.
· FMT recommends tank to have a fully supported bottom with ¼” neoprene rubber strips separating tank with support, and tank to be strapped or bracketed down.
· Tank is not designed for high performance use (application 55 MPH or greater)
· Quote valid for 30 days.

What was the capacity?

You can measure the compartment on the boat and provide those dimensions. Once we have that information, the engineering department can help you with a replacement tank.

Thank you,

I have a small problem as I removed the original RDS tank (they went by a different name then, I think)
about 18 months ago and left the tank outside. Shortly after that, it was stolen, so I don’t have the tag info.
Where do we go from here?
Thanks again.

George,
I need the label information off of the tank to provide you with a quote on a replacement. If you wish to proceed with an order, I’ll need payment in full prior to releasing the drawing for your approval.

Yeah, 'talk about a disclaimer!
Of course, we've never seen one of these fail, particularly when they're foamed in.

George, The one I ordered for the Hornet III is a DZ60 with .1875 wall to get around the 55 mph limit. About $100. more than the DZ53.

Thanks for sharing the drawings.
Sorry to hear your tank was taken George.

The only changes i would make, would be to enlarge pick up to 1/2" and add another 1/2" bung for a possible return line. Maybe move the fill to center also. Just in case you add fuel inj. or more power someday.

There's a custom tank builder up here Capeway Welding that does a lot of marine tanks.
Maybe worth e-mailing the drawing for a qoute for the helluva it.

Aluminum scrap. I bet there isn't an ounce of trash left in the woods around here, there are a lot of people who scrap for a living.

George, not sure if this will help or not but my boat has an RDS tank. It's part number #61140, .190" thk., AL, 50 gallons. One of the reason why I mention this is because when I was at Donzi several years ago they had a left over SE tank sitting in inventory. I was told it was a special order tank for the SE which is why they had not used it. What do you think the chances are that it's still there and for sale?

some things have changed since I did mine , florida marine tanks were in fla and built the tanks in ohio, now it looks like they are in the carolinas. wonder where they build the tanks??

well that and the prices

they have been doing the drawing thing for along time basically they don't want to supply you with a free drawing that you can take someplace else and have the tank mfg'rd. the FMT23DZ I had made ran $230 delivered in 2003.

George, if you can, please call RDS. Ask for Linda in sales. Chuck is the man who lined all this up.

I *think* it is all straightened out.
