I was looking for an engine dolly and didnt really like what I was finding. I went to a local Speed Shop and found this. The race guys use them to transport thier engines to and from the track. Very simple and rugged.

Take the wheels off for secure transport and put on for the garage. Just a link where I found one

Trueser bought a pair of these and I ended up getting a pair myself...They work great. These are $35 and the casters are $42, which I didn't get. So all together they are slightly cheaper.

click on products and they have a few different options depending on which type of engine you have.

If you want to be able to store and roll around an engine in an extremely compact space, I would highly recommend one of these cradles. You can quickly take off the castors for transport in your truck. http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/80065/10002/-1

As far as engine stands, I really like the collapsable type like these for working on engines. When not in use, they take up very little floor space. Bill

I like that transport jig from Jegs for $35. you can't even build them yourself for what the raw material will cost let alone the time and paint.
Grateful for posting that link Bill. http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/80065/10002/-1
Including the folding eng shop stand from Northern Tools..
Thanks again,
Walt

I forgot to add something....the nice thing about the style that you found and the ones I have are that you can work on the engine and they don't get in the way...I've added all accessories to the front of the motor and you can put the the flywheel coupler and bellhousing on without them getting in the way...the only downside is that without the casters the oil pan might hit (mainly BBC).....I don't have casters on so I just laid a 2x6 flat underneath them. Some of the other styles don't allow you to add oil block adapters or any accessories, especially the back of the engine.

I have seen them in quite a few trailers at the track, the one thing that bothers me is no cross brace connecting the two sides. Probably a little over cautious due to me having worked mostly on clients engines, but without the cross brass there is a lot of extra load on the bolt when wheeling over rough surfaces. I like Walt's find better it will hold a fully dressed engine with less sweat!
