I made these screens today in the shop. I ordered the screen from http://www.pitstopusa.com.
I bent a 90 degree angle on the bottom of the screen to keep the screen together while cutting and to also provide strength. Then trimmed so that the screen is slightly deeper than the vent opening. This keeps the screen locked in place when secured to the deck. Finally I used a piece of weatherstrip on the flange before mounting to prevent the screen from chaffing the paint.

I like them alot, they look well fitted and with (what apears to be) the right gauge of wire. In this instance, I think you've solved the problem
of hard to find parts

 Verry verry nice. Could someone change from the new style to this style. I like these, classy, clean and eye appealing.

Excellent idea and Look Geat!
And to think I only use black alum screen cupped and glued into the black plastic hose connector to keep the bigger size spiders from getting in and building nest in the vent hoses down below.
What section is that wire screen located in, I was scanning thru the website but didn't find it yet. http://www.pitstopusa.com.

Those look JUST RIGHT to me. Ditto on the "you could sell them" comment.

My only concern is I don't know what it takes to keep them looking good (especially in a salt environment like I have), but man do they look sharp. I wonder if they can be clearcoated somehow, or something.

These are not that difficult to make. The only thing you need for this job is some big tin snips, safety glasses (the pieces really fly when cutting) and some patience. You need to get the screen to fit nicely with the right amount of "crush" so that it locks in place when mounted to the deck. The screen is cheap so if you screw up the first one, try again, you get a
1' x 3' piece for about $15.00. I would not feel comfortable selling them unless I could fit them to the owners vents.

Ordered a piece of the SS screen today; will see how good I am with a pair of tin snips! :pimp:

When I remade mine, I was worried about the screen scratching the deck. I got a length of 1/8 clear vinyl tubing and slit it length-wise. It graps the screen and saves the paint.

I noticed on the 2009 left over Donzi's for sale that they have some kind of black thing under the vents that prevent them from being mounted directly to the hull. Does anyone have these and what are they? Plastic or rubber? Any close up pics would be appreciated. Comments?
Thanks

I'm not sure if its rubber or plastic but I know I've seen them on a handful of websites for sale.

Parnell,

I haven't checked into the screen material at all yet, so I don't know how it is sold.

IF, (that's a big if) you had enough extra to do two more vents, I would be happy to buy the material from you. I need to make new ones for the (2) vents on mine.

I have a 2009 18. The piece under the chrome vents are made of a plastic
material. There are screws that hold the plastic piece to the deck. The vent is attached at one end with slide in hooks and on the rear with a singhe fastener. I'm in the process of making the screen inserts now.

BUIZ, Don't really know. Checked the DONZI websight, no info there. If I read my HIN # correctly, mine is #3. DNAC8003H809 It is still interesting to know how many were built. Picked mine up in October of 08. It was ordered in June of 08.

cut your screen on with the mesh on a bias. This will help keep it from unravelling. And also help lock it in place when mounted to the deck.

Nice stuff. Checked them out. Minimum order 12 square feet? :shocking: Thats a lot of mesh.

Bias?
Meaning cut on a angle - slant, but its welded mesh screen so it won't fray or unravel.

The screen I used was not welded. That's why I cut them on an angle.

If you need a foot let me know. It was $10.00 per SQ FT and I will cut you a foot and ship it for the $10 plus $5.00 shipping. It is the better T316 rather than the T304. To keep it looking like new, use Barkeepers Friend. It is for cleaning stainless sinks. It is great stuff.
Let me know if you need some. I only need one foot myself.

Decided to go with traditional installation however I used McMaster-Carr 12x12 course mesh woven wire. This stuff is tough to trim however I found it fits much better in the groove than the thin gauge screen material I replaced.

Your the man. I will let you know how the screen I purchased turns out.
