The Emma Maersk, part of a Danish shipping line,
is shown in the photos below..

What a ship....no wonder 'Made in China ' is
displacing North American made goods big time.
This monster transports goods across the Pacific in about 5 days!!!

This is how Wal-Mart gets it's stuff from China . 15,000 containers and a
207' deck beam!

The crew-size: 13 people on a ship longer than a US aircraft carrier (which
has a crew of 5,000).

Notice that 207' beam means it cannot fit through the Panama or Suez Canals .

It is strictly transpacific. Cruise speed: 31 knots.

The goods arrive 4 days before the typical container ship (18-20 knots) on
a China -to- California run. So this behemoth is hugely competitive when
carrying perishable goods.

The ship was built in five sections. The sections floated together and
then welded.

The command bridge is higher than a 10-story building and has 11
cargo crane rigs that can operate simultaneously
Additional info:

Country of origin - Denmark
Length - 1,302 ft
Width - 207 ft
Net cargo - 123,200 tons
Engine - 14 cylinders in-line diesel engine (110,000 BHP)
Cruise Speed - 31 knots
Cargo capacity - 15,000 TEU (1 TEU = 20 cubic feet)
Crew - 13 people !
First Trip - Sept. 08, 2006
Construction cost - US $145,000,000+

Silicone painting applied to the ship bottom reduces water
resistance and saves 317,000 gallons of diesel per year.

Somebody better call the Suez Canal guys, the Emma Maersk rolled through there 4 days ago. They need to get busy and fix the canal before she's back in 2 weeks.
Looking at her schedule, she has never made a trip to North America, looks like she mainly runs from Asia to Europe.
The Emma Maersk is a superb vessel, but why does there always have to be an embellishment to the story?

cruising speed is mid 20's in knots.

Very cool ship. it was on one of those discovery channel shows. If I remember right you can shut individual cylinders off in the giant engine and you can actually get inside each cylinder to inspect it via a door!

The articles below seem to contradict El Bandido statements, the earlier generation Maersk line ships fit your discription. There does seem to be a discrepancy as to the speed, most say 31kts and one states 31mph. Only more research will clear that up.

The biggest problem with the Suez is depth. There are no locks there. So with that said tankers have a problem because they tend to hold more weight. Cargo ships like this one are not nearly has heavy so they draw less water and usually fit.

Emma fits... if you search you can find pictures of it in the canal.

Ummm Mean Ol Boat Mechanic, the first link is just another cut an paste fluff piece, the second link is from Maersk Shippings website, all it says is that they travel from SE ASIA to North America, doesn't say which ship, but I'm pretty sure they have more than one, and the third page is where this quote comes from
"The Emma Mærsk represents the sixth generation of containership, also called the New Panamax class, because it will be able to travel through the new Panama Canal after it opens around 2014. The vessel, with a capacity of 11,000 teus, is the first to be launched in Maersk’s PS-class. The ship has a waste heat recovery system, which uses exhaust gasses to generate some of the electricity needed aboard the vessel. Its hull is also covered with silicone-based paint, which improves fuel efficiency. The Emma Mærsk entered service on the Europe to Asia route in 2006."

Log onto Maersk's site, you can track a vessel's wherabouts by name, the Emma Maersk was in the Suez canal in early February, and she is due back in the canal on February 28th.
