Just an update on the 16 classic BH conversion. There has been talk of this happening and I am just finishing up the drive swap to the BH. So here are some of the details. The engine is 415ci sbc edelbrock rpm heads rpm air gap intake 750 vac secondary carb, complete roller valve train. Cam is a crane 119661 grind, intake 230 @ 0.050 .539 lift, exhaust 238 @0.050 .559 lift. Exhaust is stainless marine with dry risers to the transom. The BH drive is mounted with the prop shaft c/l 2.75" above the bottom of the boat, with the drive level. So as a resault just skeg below the boats bottom. MOP this is as high as I could go with the X dim. without major mods. The driver ratio ended up being 1.65. I have a set of 28 BIII props on the milling machine to mod for the first outing. So soon as the ice is out of the lake she gets wet. Hope all the effort will pay off with a better handling, faster and more reliable ride.

I think you will need to remove the hook if any of the gear case bullet is the water flow, I only had a little below the bottom and got a lot of stern lift as speed increased. Can't wait to hear your results, the Blackhawk will disappear "ALL" of the 16's high speed handling quirks!

The mod needed for the BIII's to work is to cut 3/16" out of the inside of the forward prop, the BIII wheels have a lot more blade area then the BH wheels we will have to see how the spin up. IMO you will not have much blade flexure issue on a 16, I put a fair amount of time on the BIII's that I had on mine. Also at least one of the BH guys had a set for spares and found he lost very little speed, the issue with the BIII wheels is they also contribute to stern lift. We will know a lot come spring, I predict speed well into the 90's one you get the bugs out. Remember Steve's BH18 hit 79 with a bone stock 300 Merc, he said he might try the 165HP Pro Charger kit not sure if he did though. You will have one bitchen hot 16!!!!!!!!!

Thanks all for the inspiration! MOP the bIII props I have may get some blade area removed depending on the results in stock form. The edellbrock top makes 460 hp on a 383 in the 6000 rpm range, so that said with 415 cubes and the 6" rod it is making all that. The limiting factor is the small port rpm head on this motor. This limits the big numbers up top, but it is probably putting out 525ft/lb of torque. The mid range on this motor is wild. I will try and get some pic posted this comming week!

Do you think a blackhawk is that much more effecient than an alpha ss that a 460hp 16 is going to do this? BTW Totally agree with the bitchen part Sweet.

Not sure if you noticed my comment about Steve's 18 doing 79 with a bone stock 300 Merc, now loose some weight add some HP and lift the gear case out of the water flow and lets see what happens. Norm is a little short of the correct X, but the 16 has way more bow lift then it needs. I am betting it will stain a few shorts!!!

It would run 75mph on the standard gen II alpha, and the ride was wild. So if anything with the reduced drag and counter rotation, the boat should pick up some mph. The goal is 80mph with handling and reliability. For anybody that has been there first hand for a drive in a 16 with a standard alpha at 75 it is a rush to say the least.
