I just purchased a set of stainless 4'' exhaust system and was thinking of buying the cross over system that they sell, that they say gives you 25% more power. Is this a good buy. Also how do you now what side to buy port or starboard.350 sbc .

Only if you have a Bravo or a Volvo drive using an external mounted raw water pump, if you have a Alpha-1 sterndrive don't buy it because the small lower unit water pump isn't enough without the assist of the automotive engine block w/pump to circulate coolant water.

...with a crossover my (Ford 351) V8 engine ran a bit cooler but I haven't noticed 25% more power at that time with my volvo outdrive...

I had one on an Alpha / 350 and it worked fine.

25% more power is ridiculous. You should pick up a couple of HP though. The real benefit of it in my eyes is you never have to replace a water pump again.

The port or starboard thing is based on your hose routing. I think mine went to Port. Just look at your current hose routing and you can tell where the hose comes into the water pump.

The hose on mine, from drive to water pump, was a different size. Because I was already in there, I just ran new hoses all together.

Because I was running an Alpha, I intentionally put a slight kink in the hose between the thermostat and crossover to force most of the water through the engine first. Don't bother getting the kind that is not designed to run a Thermostat. They will be a chronic pain in the butt.

I agree 25% is absurd. You will get better cooling in most cases if you have non alpha set up. However you only get a couple Hp increase.. Not 25%.. ;) Jamie / Lakeside

Mike, Thats what I was thinking. On a well built motor with high hp I dont think you would gain more than about 10-25hp or so. There are quite a bit of variables.. ;) Jamie

The cross over has marginal effect on HP, what does is the sea pump how it is driven and controlling it pressure. A crank pump add a little not having to drive a belt arrangement, but proper pump sizing and pressure regulation does and quite a bit. I went from belt to crank and lost a lot of top end due to over pressure, way to much water in the exhaust causing back pressure. To run our engine all we need is enough water not to much!

I sell them, but shipping outside the USA costs a bit more than inside the USA.. If interested feel free to call me.. :) You may also be able to run a different water outlet depending on what exact set up you have.. :)
