Some, mostly the late 80's thru early 90's Honda vintage, but as long as your issues aren't electrical shift related ask away:crossfing:..

it has compreesion, spark, and fuel but wont start with the key 99% of the time but will start with the rope. on the trail it will die and wont restart with key but does with the rope. dealer has never seen this before, had it for 2 1/2 mo and cant fix it. it's a 2002 polaris sportsman 400

I had a Polaris Magnum 4x4 425

mine did that when new, it was the key switch.. I got the switch from the Polaris dealer in Cookeville on Interstate Drive.. actually, he warrantied the switch, even though I bought the machine in Leesburg Fla..

When you turn the key on, does the headlight come on?

If not, check the two wires on the switch on the left handlebar, make sure they are connected.

With the key in the start mode, check the soleinoid by the battery, jump it, see if it starts. Possibly it is the starter.

Obviously its not getting the above cause if it was it would be running, but since it starts with the pull or kick start your issue has to be electrical.

My first thought is that the emergency handle bar mounted kill switch is connected some how in this only because when you try using the electric start mode it doesn't start, but not when you kick start it.
I'd check the key switch wiring to see if you have a grounding pinched ign wire attached somewhere in between on the starter side of the key sw, since I imagine you have a factory plug type wire harness to the back of the key sw and is not connected by screw terminals that someone could have mis-connected?
Start tracing wires cause i'm sure thats where you'll find the problem..
