View Full Version : What should a new classic look like?

Hey everyone,

I am in the process of looking in to buying a new 22' 2010 donzi classic and would like to get an idea of what you die hard classic fans think should be in the boat. Here i am torn between the true 1970"s classic with the pleats in the bucket seats and simple paint and the new Shelby or 009 with fresh bright vibrant paint and a up dated interior The same is to say about my taste in music but thats a whole different story..

So lets hear it!

If you could build the 22 classic of your dreams what would it be?

Though more work keeping up with IMO boats of color seem to be a little more popular choice is in the eyes of the buyer!

IMO the 009 is terribly ugly. The one striped pushed off to the side does not do it for me.

I like resto-rod looking 22's best. Keep the pleated seats, but use a carbon fiber material for a fresh look. One stripe or two stripes center lined. Color can go any which way, but I do love the new metallics best just for a modern flair.

I also like candy striped interior a lot and you hardly ever see it anymore.

Here's a pic of my Minx seats. pearl white carbon fiber. If I were doing a new boat I'd probably do a different color but same material. http://www.donzi.net/forums/picture.php?albumid=49&pictureid=796

I agree with Vette on the seats and would add that perhaps a nice 'tweener is to have the hull sides a color and then the hull bottom and deck/cockpit classic white with the hull sides color for a race stripe. On the race stripe symmetry rules so center placement works for me, but you could add some flare with a thick middle and two thin left/right pin stripes.

I like the high back front seats of the Aronow Edition. Also the one piece rear seats that apparently bolt in.
As I said, I like the seats from a design and structural view, or aspect.
As far as colors and accents of the seats go, I don't have an opinion. Almost every boat is different and different things can work.
I personally like the offset stripe(s) of the 009.
Each to his own.
Some folks don't like monochromatic boats.

I like those high back seats too, but shelby style with the carbon fabric. something about the texture makes it more interesting to look at.

I always wondered how they would look with the middle part of the back upright and the centers of the front seats in full real pleat. like a modern throwback.

Take George's concept further and do a Custom Front Bench that has a bit of a highback and the extra flare of fold down middle :shocking:

I like that too. Like a dual bench seat Cig 20, but with a fold down center.

Jamie @ lakeside told me the shells for the high back seats are still available.
You could use them for a number of interesting projects.

Personally I think that a new classic should be exactly that. A new classic. I like some of the flairs that they give the 009 and the Shelby. I love what Mr X did with his.

If I wanted to go period correct, I would restore an old classic.

I like seeing different stuff. I really love GCarter's solid red. Hot Shot's boat is over the top for me but I think that it is very cool.

I love both ideas. I did a resto mod job with my X-18 and could not be happier. I think that Nemohow's (sp?) classic is undeniably cool. Then I see what Conquistador has done with his classic (period correct) and love it too.

My answer: Your boat should fit your style. Do it the way you want it. My X-18 is all me. Just like the 66 Mustang I did back in 1986 when I was in high school.

I agree, do what you want!

While you are at it be sure to install a floor in that bow area with an integrated foot stop. 90 degrees on the bow side and 60 degrees on the passenger side. Might as well get some use out of that bow area for storage and the like. When you have them design the custom front bucket seat with fold down center you will be able to carry an extra family member up front. Nice to have a spot for the 6th rider if you need one. Makes the boat more user friendly and more custom at the same time. Once you get that engineered I'd like to talk!!

Actually, I think a cool idea for a new classic would be to put a console between the front seats (bucket) and run a nice two part Livorsi throttle in the middle. That way you could also run as a driver/throttle man combo. For power? Probably something Blue with enough beans to get it to the mid 90's. I am partial to custom power but if you are having Donzi build it then blue or Ilmore.

I agree 100% and to add, they need CUP HOLDERS!!!!im sick of spilling my beer....it would be nice to also see the front seats that flip forward for extra storage under them..you got to admit it would make a nice spot for a cooler to store your beer in because you all know theirs no room for a cooler and 5 people..

Hedge is on a roll.............

but I don't like the wasted space of a center pod. Personally I think of the 22 as stealth cruiser. Think Aston Martin with a side of hold onto your ascot Ilmore!

I see Aston Casino Royale gray with that red interior and a center section on the custom front bench seat that folds forward for bolstering or backward to serve as a resting spot for the cocktails while at dock

A classic should be a classic. I can't help but be a purist...it's just my style. However, I have seen some cool mods that kept the boat what it should be. In particular, I've spent time on Hedge's X-18 and Vette's Minx. Both have some great personal touches, but are still very true to the heritage.

As for the 009's, I like 'em. I mostly like them because they're a throwback to WAY back when. The offset stripe and American flag isn't a new idea. It's from the old racing days.

Hope this helps. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!

Having had my 22 for four years now, I think they could lose a few inches out of the cockpit and a few out of the engine bay to push the tub back and lengthen the fore deck. Option of windshield to fairing bolt on, move some weight aft. Smooth the engine compartment vents into the deck, maybe just a tad more. I feel you need to be careful not to go over the line to being called plastic! I ran into that a Sag harbor a guy was BS-ing with me about Donzi's, there were a couple of the more modern appearing 40+ Go Fasts near by. He said the Donzi had class and did not look as plastic. I agree with that thinking but there are many that like the more modern look. Who knows one has to wonder if the new owners will decide to play with the look. To me the 22 has a gentleman's fast cruiser look, more of a mature go fast kind of guy look would be a shame to stray to far!

I like the clamshells. I know of one member here who copied the Shelby style flush mount vents and hood scoop and has a problem getting enough air into the engine room. A center rear passenger blocks the hoodscoop and the flush vents don't seem to work as well. To me the clam shells are essential to keeping the "Classic" look. Regarding the fairing; As far as I know any 22C can be ordered with the Shelby aluminum fairing which I highly recommend. Both direct air into your face and both are looked over not through. Since they have dropped the imported full ss frame windshield I would opt for the aluminum fairing. In fact I did :)!

That is only true to a point. AFAIK they still only offer production power and will not sell a new boat without power. Big mistake IMO. A lot of us want more than low to mid seventies. 80 is the new 70;).

Agreed about the white bottom. I would add that the strakes are a significant part of the look of the boat, and in white they show clearly with the shadowing. This gives 3-D of the curvature of the bow, which disappears with dark colors, and in my view, detracts significantly from the look of the boat. FWIW. Regardless of the subjective part of that, it certainly changes the look considerably.

If I could build s new one, I would go with the old school paint scheme (two tone with simple deck or boot striping). I would put a 525 in it and I would have a 4 bucket seat interior with a full length center console. It would be similar to my ZrComp interior.

I like it. I was thinking a soft center console. That way either throttle person could rest their arm on it and throttle. Sure it would make it harder to mover around but it would be cool. That with the seat cooler. To access the bow cabin/storage area it would have a hinged door that was flush on the passenger side. I am thinking of a fairing and no window.

Sorry, this is apropos nothing but seeing that bucket-seat interior with the center console section set me off. It looks SO much like a car interior that I want to put a car window-crank where the throttle/shifter normally resides inside the gunwale, with a noisemaker of some sort attached. Idiot rule is that any newbie who tries to roll down the window buys the beer for the day.

Chris,

Lets see a sketch with the Custom Fold Down Center Bench seat. Think Cig 20. Plus, lets remember, we are in the Great Recession, so if you sneak in the extra function of the full front bench and finished front floor you can "sell it" as a boat that is more user friendly while still respecting the time honored tradition of rest-rod cool at 80 GPS

Historically respectful
Tastefully updated
Functionally better

Anyone can buy an Outer Limits, Skater etc etc. Too much bling and the resto-rod concept gets lost in the glam.

Btw - I like the Long Deck look .........

Yeah it's his own Special Edition. I like most of what he did. At least he did it and it doesn't take a genious to know that it didn't come cheap. BTW, it is luxury AND bling. That's a custom Mccloud interior with shock absorbing front seats. When he gets that motor dialed in he'll be running easy 80s too. Definately not a trailer queen. Personally I like mine looking just like it came from the factory, as I pictured. Just pissed that I couldn't order the 525. That was a lot of work, time and $.

I have no problems with the lines of the current classics.

I just wish Donzi offered the boat in a 24 footer with a tad more beam (still under 8 foot) and a tad more c*ckpit space.

Maybe if the economy was smoking again, something larger with the classic lines might happen, but to have 4 boats between 16 and 24 feet I think is too much of a niche market.
